Luke Grimes Gives Update on ‘Necessary’ Crossover for ‘Marshals’ and ‘Dutton Ranch’ With Kelly Reilly (Exclusive)

Yellowstone siblings Luke Grimes and Kelly Reilly think that a crossover between their spinoffs is not only a good idea, but a necessity. The actors each lead their own titles on different networks: Marshals on CBS and Dutton Ranch on Paramount Network/Paramount+. TV Insider got the inside scoop for our Marshals Season 2 fall preview, and while Grimes confirms there won’t be any crossovers this season, he says that he and Reilly feel it’s “necessary” down the line.

Grimes, Reilly, and Cole Hauser have all expressed interest in having their Yellowstone worlds collide on their spinoffs, but Grimes has kept his comments brief until now.

“It’s not out of the question that we might have some sort of crossover at some point,” Grimes told TV Insider. “Beth’s basically Kayce’s only living family member other than Tate. It would make sense that down the line we’d at least talk.”

“[Kelly and I have] texted about it back and forth a lot,” Grimes added, “talked about how it’d be fun and necessary for our story arcs, however they’re going to end.”

Rescuing Tate (Brecken Merrill) is the top priority in Marshals Season 2, premiering October 4 on CBS, but Grimes knows that Kayce will need to see his sister again at some point.

Marshals follows Kayce Dutton (Grimes) and his son Tate as they make a new life for themselves in Montana after the tragic premature death of Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille).

Kayce and Tate are still living on what’s left of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, East Camp, but a rich rancher named Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey) is trying to take it for himself, and he kidnapped Tate in the Season 1 finale to do it.

Dutton Ranch Season 1 is set after Monica’s death, but due to when the two shows were written and filmed, Monica’s death couldn’t be worked into the plot of Reilly and Hauser’s spinoff.

“I think Beth misses her brother, so I would love that to happen,” Reilly told TV Insider after the Dutton Ranch Season 1 finale. “And we were all very close. Wes Bentley, who played Jamie, Kelsey. We were a family, and we miss them very much. So the more we can get back in, that’s what we’re fighting for, Cole and I. Where we get our wishes, we would love to have as many back in our world.”

“I would absolutely imagine that there’ll be some checking in on her brother, and we just didn’t see it this year,” Reilly noted of Monica’s death, adding, “I think it’s something that was a missed opportunity, quite honestly. But we’re all both trying to start up these big shows. And I think we can see where there are gaps and we see where things needed to be fixed. And that’s what you get the opportunity to do in a Season 2.”

Beth and Rip (Hauser) are dealing with their own kidnapped son, Carter (Finn Little), in Dutton Ranch, which is set in Texas. Season 2 is currently in the works.
