Martha Stewart Addresses ‘Street Cred’ From Prison Stint
Martha Stewart launched a lifestyle magazine in 1990, followed by a TV show. She taught us how to manage our homes and cook a good meal. But the media mogul landed in prison in 2004 after an insider trading scandal. She wasn’t convicted of insider trading but was convicted of lying to the authorities about it.
She served five months in federal prison, followed by five months of home confinement and two years of probation. It was a huge scandal at the time. While she was radioactive for a while, it didn’t take long for her to reinvent herself and now she’s more popular than ever.
PEOPLE magazine caught up with her on her 156-acre farm in Bedford, New York, to recreate a cover photo from 1995 of her holding one of her many farm animals. The outlet asked about her prison stint giving her “street cred.” Martha Stewart responded, “Of course it gave me street cred. I mean, you would never know what jail was like until you go to jail. It’s a horrible place. It’s not a restorative process.”
Martha Stewart never shies away from her criminal past. However, she doesn’t talk about it that often. Did her “street cred” play a part in her friendship with rapper Snoop Dogg?
“No, I don’t think Snoop likes me because I have street cred. I invited Snoop to be on my show [in 2008] because he was a rapper, and I was attracted to rappers. I like rap music,” she said.

Martha Stewart is also attracted to younger men. Her first – and only – marriage to Andrew Stewart ended in 1990. She told PEOPLE magazine that her ex was a “jerk.” She also revealed a shocking change in opinion since an interview five years ago.
Five years ago, she told the outlet that she envied married couples. Now? “The older you get, the less you really need a mate, I think. I wouldn’t want to be beleaguered with an older, ill person,” she said. But that doesn’t mean she’s lonely.

“Well, I’ve done that. Been there, done that. I have lots of friends,” she said about dating younger men. “I’m not a lonely person. I have a very, very full —oh, probably too full! — life. I go out on . . . I don’t know if you call them dates or not, but I go out.”
