Matchbox Twenty has been making its way around the festival circuit, and they just stopped in Springfield, Illinois. Unfortunately, their set was halted as lead singer Rob Thomas impaled drummer-turned-guitarist Paul Doucette in the head. Keep reading for more details and to see the video.

Rob Thomas Breaks His Classic Move

It has been 30 years since Matchbox Twenty burst onto the scene, and they have been knocking out hits ever since. Rob Thomas is synonymous with the Santana single, “Smooth,” which garnered three Grammy awards. He launched a solo career, but MB20 continues to tour every few years, with 2026 being a big one. Again, it is their 30th anniversary, yet they have opted to make their way around the festival scene. They have been extremely well-received, and fans are feeling extremely nostalgic. On Sunday, August 16th, they made a stop in Springfield, Illinois.

Rob was belting out “Bent,” and fans know that he tends to swing around his microphone stand. However, this time, guitarist Paul Doucette was behind him and ended up getting impaled in the head. This was purely accidental, and Rob, 54, thought he might have “killed” his best friend and bandmate. He immediately stopped and shared this with the audience:

“Every night I’m over here, and I’m throwing this Goddamn thing around. It nailed him. It nailed him hard. My best friend in the world, and I think I almost killed him, and I feel really bad about this. Will you give us one second?”

Paul went to get help in the back and did make light of what had happened. Clearly, he was not mad and resurfaced shortly after with wine in his hands. Those in the audience noted that they could sense how badly Rob Thomas felt. Moreover, they joked that they could sense that the Matchbox Twenty frontman was going to hit someone; it was just a matter of time.

All Is Well

When all was said and done, things were just fine with Paul Doucette. Additionally, Rob Thomas’ son even asked for footage of the accident happening:

  • Maison Thomas Eudy: I will pay for the footage of this happening.

However, Matchbox Twenty fans saw the accident and had nothing but love for the band. Moreover, they took time to poke fun at Rob and MB20:

  • I was there. He felt sooo bad!!
  • Omg 😮 the mic stand twirl has always been iconic Rob 😍 but this takes it to an all new level 🤣🤣
  • Definitely not SMOOTH by Santana feat. Rob Thomas.
