What To Know
- Nearly five months after Nancy Guthrie’s abduction, a Mexican search group found 25 unmarked graves near Nogales, Sonora.
- Experts believe a Native reservation near the border could be key to the case.
- The investigation remains active with no suspects identified.
Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mother, Nancy Guthrie, is still missing nearly five months after her abduction in Tucson, Arizona — and a Mexican search group recently shared an update after finding 25 unmarked graves following an anonymous tip.
On Friday, June 19, NewsNation reported that the Mexican volunteer search group Buscando Corazones Nogales continued searching for the 84-year-old on Wednesday, June 17. Although they focused on two new locations near Nogales, Sonora, the effort did not result in finding Nancy’s body. The search team has, however, uncovered 25 unmarked graves not linked to Savannah’s mom.
Meanwhile, a retired FBI agent, Steve Moore, and a retired Pima County SWAT Commander, Bob Krieger, recently told NewsNation’s Brian Entin that a Native American reservation could hold the key in the search for Nancy’s grave.
“If I were a betting man and someone said they absolutely went into Mexico, I’d say they probably went through the reservation at some point,” Krieger said.
Moore agreed, telling Entin, “You could go miles without seeing any kind of residents. He added, “But at the same time, if anybody does see you and doesn’t recognize you, you’re going to stand out, especially if there’s two or three of you, or a vehicle is going to be a big deal.”
On May 10, Buscando Corazones Nogales received an anonymous tip claiming that Nancy had been buried in a shallow grave about 70 miles from her Tucson home. A May 16 search turned up nothing, and so did another search following a second anonymous tip about a different location nearby.

On June 11, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos released a statement via X acknowledging the search group. “We are aware of reports regarding an anonymous tip related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation that was provided to a group in Mexico,” he wrote. “At this time, we have not been contacted by Mexican authorities.”
Nanos added, “The investigation remains active and ongoing, and we will continue to follow up on any credible information.”
Nancy was last seen at her Catalina Foothills home on the evening of January 31. Despite Savannah offering a $1 million reward, no suspect has been named in the case.
