Michael B. Jordan is following up his Oscar-winning performance in Sinners with an ambitious project. Jordan is serving as director, star, and executive producer of The Thomas Crown Affair, the second remake of the classic film from 1968. Here’s everything you need to know about it before it comes out in theaters.

What is The Thomas Crown Affair about?

The first Thomas Crown Affair was an original story written by Alan R. Trustman and directed by Norman Jewison. The film came out in 1968 and starred Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. McQueen plays the titular character, a bored billionaire who entertains himself by robbing a bank. An insurance investigator, Vicki Anderson (Dunaway), tries to catch him red-handed. The movie turned McQueen into a star.

The first film received two Oscar nominations, Best Original Score and Best Original Song, winning the latter category. A version of the song, “The Windmills of Your Mind,” was recently featured in the final scene of Severance Season 2. Jon Batiste is making the music for Jordan’s Thomas Crown Affair.

The 1999 remake, starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo, changed the heist from a bank robbery to the theft of a priceless painting. Russo’s character is named Catherine Olds Banning, but she’s still an insurance investigator. Only this time, she works for the museum Thomas targets.

Jordan’s remake keeps the art heist from the previous remake. Jordan is Thomas Crown, with Adria Arjona as the investigator in the cat-and-mouse game.

When does The Thomas Crown Affair come out in theaters?

Jordan’s Thomas Crown Affair comes out in theaters and IMAX on March 5, 2027.

Who is in The Thomas Crown Affair 2027 cast?

Jordan has compiled a star-studded cast for the remake that includes Arjona, his Black Panther costar Danai Gurira, Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, and Pilou Asbæk.

Is there a Thomas Crown Affair trailer?

Yes, you can see Jordan, Arjona, and Branagh in the trailer above. It was released on July 29. One of the catchphrases in the trailer is, “Revenge is a work of art,” hinting at more deeply personal motivations for the main character. There’s also a love story between the billionaire and the investigator that adds layers to their cat-and-mouse game.

The Thomas Crown Affair is Jordan’s second time directing a film. His first was Creed III, in which he also starred. Jordan says his version of this story is a re-imagination of the classic.

“I think it’s not going to be what exactly people are expecting as well. When you’re re-imagining something, it’s not a remake,” Jordan told Deadline. “It’s not a reboot. It’s a re-imagination, and I’m really excited about it because I really care about this movie and its title.”

Jordan said at CinemaCon in 2026 that he wanted to change The Thomas Crown Affair story by giving it “the style, the rebellion, but giving him a real mission.”

“I needed somebody who could keep him on his toes,” Jordan added of Arjona’s character. “An actress who can portray strength and vulnerability. She understands his game but falls in love with him.”

Jordan’s version is also produced by Amazon MGM Studios, so if it makes its streaming debut, it will likely be on Prime Video.
