When it came to casting the HGTV star/celebrity pairings for Rock the Block Season 7, the cast was left completely in the dark.
Mina Starsiak Hawk answered fan questions about the show via her Instagram Story on Tuesday, May 12. One of her posts included a response to a fan question that asked, “I might have missed this. How did they pick the pairs?”
Starsiak Hawk revealed that she has “no idea how the powers that be decided who we got paired up with,” but thinks the casting directors “did a really amazing job.” She added, “I think you switch any of us around and mix up different partners, it just wouldn’t have been the same. It wouldn’t have been as good. It still would have been good, but I think the people in charge at the network who decided, ‘Brooke and Scott should be together. This is going to be some dynamite, whether it’s in a good way or bad way.’”
She continued, “Vernon and I just paired really well, and so did Taniya and Drew, and Kim and Chelsea. I guess that’s the magic of the production team that none of us really know the answer to.”
For the first time in the show’s history, Season 7 features some of HGTV’s biggest names competing alongside celebrities with experience in home renovation and design. In addition to herself and her partner, Vernon Davis, this season’s teams include Brooke Hogan and Scott McGillivray, Taniya Nayak and Drew Lachey, and Kim Wolfe and Chelsea Meissner.

Davis gushed over his partnership with Starsiak Hawk in an exclusive interview with TV Insider ahead of the show’s April 13 premiere. “She was amazing. She’s a hard worker, and she got up every, every day with great enthusiasm,” he shared. “She’d always be the first one on set, last one to leave. She really wanted to win, and I could see it in her.”
Davis added, “Not only did she want to win, but I learned a lot of stuff from her, from chopping wood to installations with cabinets, and just creating our own cushions and things of that nature. She was really a treat to be around.”
As for who he thought was his and Starsiak Hawk’s biggest competition on the Block? “I always thought Scott and Brooke was our biggest competition. They’re just our biggest competition,” Davis revealed. “I always thought that from the beginning to the end, just because of their confidence. They had great confidence. They were always excited and happy. So, I just thought they’d be our biggest competition.”
Starsiak Hawk and Davis have continuously impressed the judges with their “Comfortable Elegance” home designs. However, it took until Episode 5 — which aired on Monday, May 11 — for the duo to score their first win of the season. The pair impressed guest judge Luann de Lesseps with their renovations to the office, laundry room, and RV garage.
“I haven’t won anything ever, so it’s a big deal,” Mina said in a confessional. “It’s a great feeling. I’m glad I have a win under my belt; we have one as a team. And now, we just focus on the big win.” Vernon, for his part, stated, “She just puts so much into this… I’m happy for her. I’m happy for us.”
