The Westies

SUNDAY: A period mob drama explores the tension between the unruly Irish “Westies” of Hell’s Kitchen, led by the steely Eamon Sweeney (Oscar winner J.K. Simmons), and New York’s established Mafia clans, particularly the Gambino family and its then-deputy John Gotti (Hamish Allan-Headley), as they clash in the 1980s while dividing spoils during the construction of the Javits Convention Center. Sweeney tries to convince his crew to “keep our eyes on the big picture” with this gold mine of corruption on their turf, but conflict is inevitable. Grantchester‘s Tom Brittney co-stars as Sweeney’s trusted associate Jimmy Roarke, who’s got his hands full keeping his unstable best friend Mickey (Stanley Morgan), a Vietnam War vet just out of Bellevue, under control. When things begin to spiral, Westies’ favorite corrupt police officer Glenn Keenan (Bosch‘s Titus Welliver) is caught in the middle, having been recruited into an FBI task force investigating the mob. The series launches with two episodes.

Interview With the Vampire

SUNDAY: It took long enough, but the penultimate episode of the rebranded supernatural series finally gets back to its passionate roots, with rock star Lestat (Sam Reid) reconnecting with his former lover and soulmate Louis (Jacob Anderson) as a reminder of what drew us to this franchise in the first place. It’s the eve of a concert in Montreal that’s expected to draw 50,000 vampires, the largest gathering ever, and there’s debate over whether this is a good or bad thing. “What could go wrong?” queries Louis, who meets Sofia aka Gabrielle (Jennifer Ehle) for the first time. In the unsettling aftermath of that encounter, the vamps reach across the franchise aisle to the world of the Mayfair witches, enlisting the powerful witch Merrick Mayfair (Sarah Afful) to clear up another personal matter, though they may not enjoy the consequences.

Grantchester

SUNDAY: In a crossover of Masterpiece franchises, All Creatures Great and Small‘s Nicholas Ralph guest-stars on the 1960s pastoral crime drama as a vicar newly returned from Africa, whom Alphy (Rishi Nair) meets when crashing a spiritual retreat marred by a homeless man’s nearby drowning. The realization that Alphy wasn’t invited to this gathering adds to his recent spiritual crisis. Elsewhere at the village precinct, Geordie (Robson Green) and Miss Scott (Melissa Johns) each have secrets they’re reluctant to spill.

House of the Dragon

SUNDAY: You had to know when they cast a major TV star like James Norton (Grantchester, Happy Valley, most recently House of Guinness) as Lord Ormund Hightower, that he’d become a key antagonist in the Targaryens’ pre-Game of Thrones saga. His latest moves: seizing the stronghold of Tumbleton and irking the new queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) by sending an imposter to pose as hostage prince Daeron. While Ormond plots to place his ward upon the Iron Throne, the queen’s uncle/husband Daemon (Matt Smith) heads to the Vale to replenish the kingdom’s coffers, only to make a disturbing discovery.
