More ‘King of the Hill,’ Touring Ugly Houses, Back to School With ‘Harry Wild,’ Storytelling Through Dance

King of the Hill

The revival of Mike Judge’s Emmy-winning animated comedy returns for a second year with 10 new episodes, and I’m pretty sure Hank Hill (voiced by Judge) would give a “what in the world” sigh upon learning that not only is his show, once a staple of the Fox network, is now behind a streaming paywall, but it’s being dropped all at once as a binge. (Wouldn’t a good old-fashioned weekly schedule keep fans coming back? That’s how Hulu is presenting the new season of Futurama in August.) Regardless, it’s still fun watching Hank confront modern aggravations like an electric vehicle someone has parked in front of his Arlen, Texas home or fidget while drugstore clerks open glass cases just to get a tube of toothpaste. Hank and Peggy’s (Kathy Najimy) son Bobby (voiced by Pamela Adlon) is in a happier place, courting Connie (Lauren Tom) while running his own restaurant, taking his dad to a sci-fi convention, and auditioning for a reality show.

Ugliest House in America

One person’s eyesore is another person’s delight, especially if that person is Retta (Parks and Recreation), returning as host for the eighth season of the show that travels the country looking for homes that might freak out the Addams Family. The “winner” is rewarded with a renovation by designer Alison Victoria in the season finale. In the opener, Retta surveys homes in America’s frontier region, finding a house with rocks for a roof and an Art Deco monstrosity with padded wallpaper.

Harry Wild

Retired professor turned private eye Harry Wild (Jane Seymour) makes a brief return to academia, posing as a substitute teacher to sniff out a killer at an exclusive boarding school. Her client is a scholarship student who once bullied her sidekick, Fergus (Rohan Nedd), and is trying to reform, but the snobs at St. Bart’s peg him as the prime suspect in the unpopular headmaster’s murder. Literary references include a sly mention of Steinbeck’s East of Eden (whose 1981 miniseries adaptation made Seymour a star) and advocacy for the Brontë sisters, whom the lads at the school regard as “chick lit.”

Dancing With the Stars: The Next Pro

The education continues for the remaining dancers vying for a coveted spot as a future pro on Dancing With the Stars. Longtime pro Brandon Armstrong mentors the group on the art of telling a personal story through song: “If you’re not allowed to speak it, how do you show it?” The men and women are paired up this week to choose one of their stories to tell, and not all of the collaborations go smoothly. Which means for one of the contestants, it will be their last dance.

World War II with Tom Hanks

The historical docuseries charts the beginning of the end of the global conflict with two episodes before next week’s finale. The first, “No Surrender,” depicts the brutal battles in the Pacific war theater during 1944 and 1945, and in “Last Days of the Reich” (9/8c), the Allied march toward Berlin prompts Adolf Hitler to urge his Nazi followers to fight to the bitter end. We all know how that turned out.

• American Ninja Warrior (8/7c, NBC): The competition moves an hour earlier with the first round of Central Regional Qualifying tryouts. Followed by a new episode of The Wall (10/9c).
• Survivor (8/7c, CBS): In case you missed it, or want to experience it again, the reality pioneer’s Emmy-nominated milestone 50th season is being replayed starting with the three-hour opener. Episodes air Tuesday (8/7c) and Wednesday (9:30/8:30c), continuing on Wednesdays and Tuesdays (starting Aug. 11) through Sept. 15.
• A Killer Among Friends (9/8c, Investigation Discovery): Jennifer Love Hewitt returns as executive producer and narrator for the second season of the true-crime series about deadly betrayal among besties. The opener exposes dark secrets after a woman disappears in Florida.
• The Dating Game (10/9c, PBS): The 39th season of the documentary anthology POV opens with Violet Du Feng’s film exploring the dating crisis in China, where men greatly outnumber women. The special profiles three working-class bachelors at a seven-day dating camp where a coach helps them try to find love.
