‘Not Suitable for Work’s Stars Break Down Episode 3’s Dinner Party Drama (Exclusive)

Mindy Kaling‘s latest TV series has arrived, and it’s introducing viewers to an all-new set of TV friends in Not Suitable for Work. The first three episodes have officially landed on Hulu, quickly unraveling what viewers can anticipate from the comedy about five young adults making their way in the working world, while also navigating personal relationships and connections. Warning: Spoilers for the Not Suitable for Work, Season 1, Episodes 1-3 ahead!

In the third episode, “The Philadelphia Thirst Monster,” AJ (Ella Hunt) attempts to throw a dinner party at her and her best friend Abby’s (Avantika) apartment as a thank you to her neighbor and coworker Davis (Will Angus) for helping her with an assignment. Little does she know that Davis has a huge crush on her and thinks the dinner party is a date.

Adding to the mix is Davis’ roommate Kel (Nicholas Duvernay), who thinks he’s been summoned by Abby for a hookup after crushing on her for some time. The real reason the thank-you dinner turns into a party, though, is because AJ impulsively invites her boss Bill (Jay Ellis), who Abby declares is hot.

While the girls wait for Bill’s arrival, they attempt to feed Davis and Kel, unaware that Davis has a seafood allergy. He eats a single oyster, telling Kel that he can get by if he only has the one, but the night quickly turns into him taking bites of food and running to inject himself with an EpiPen at his own apartment.

The back-and-forth nature of it all certainly wasn’t lost on Angus, who shares, “I really enjoyed shooting that scene. I could feel them caking all this makeup on me and the sweat progressively getting worse throughout the day, and I would forget what I looked like… so every three or four hours, I would like go use the restroom and I would see myself in the mirror and be like, ‘Oh my God, I look like Frankenstein!’”

Meanwhile, Duvernay sings Angus’ praises, saying, “I think Will is just inherently funny being himself, so when he’s doing something like slurping an oyster while profusely sweating in a turtleneck… even the slurping sounds itself… There was not a single take that I didn’t break.”

That’s certainly the comedic element of the night, which ends with Davis and Kel’s other roommate Josh (Jack Martin) arriving to drop off wine AJ requested after he signs for a box that ultimately goes missing in the building.

At this point, AJ has just learned about the time that Josh and Davis visited the University of Pennsylvania, where she attended school, eager to hear another perspective on a pivotal event. AJ and Josh had hooked up, with him ultimately forgetting who she was when they reunited in their apartment building at the start of the season.

It turned out that Josh had given AJ a nickname the weekend they met, referring to her as “The Philadelphia Thirst Monster” to Davis. Angered, AJ confronts Josh, who reveals the real reason he ghosted her after they hooked up was because after they’d finished, she asked, “Is that it?”

AJ goes on to explain it was a genuine question because it was the first time she’d had sex, which only adds layers to the situation. In other words, it’s a horrifyingly memorable dinner party that is capped off with Davis collapsing and breaking Abby and AJ’s coffee table after allowing his allergic reaction to progress far enough that anaphylaxis sets in.

But does this mark the end of Abby and AJ’s dinner parties? “Absolutely not,” Avantika says. “Have you seen their apartment? We’re so so lucky to have an apartment like that in New York. We’re going to enjoy our rent. We’re gonna throw those dinner parties.”

“Also, that was not our fault,” she adds, referring to Davis’ reaction. “If a man wanders in and doesn’t tell me he has a shellfish allergy… one, you’re eating my gumbo, number two, you’re paying for my furniture, and three, when I order my new table, you will be hauling it from Facebook Marketplace to my apartment.”

“That’s such a good point,” Hunt chimes in, adding, “It’s normally the sort of thing I get really fixated on: details like, so, who replaced the table and what did they replace it with?”

“We definitely replaced it.” Avantika offers, saying, “A man will not deter us from throwing another dinner party.” The only question we have then is when the next one is, and are we invited?
