Warner Bros. Discovery has reaffirmed its intentions to make the first Game of Thrones movie. The prequel film is all about Aegon the Conqueror, the first Targaryen ruler of Westeros. The working title is Aegon’s Conquest. The movie was first announced in April 2026 during a CinemaCon presentation, and WBD gave an update on it in a quarterly letter to shareholders on August 6, 2026.

The letter said, “Beyond 2027, the slate will continue to leverage iconic intellectual property, including the theatrical event film Aegon’s Conquest from the Game of Thrones universe, the next installment of The Matrix, the next Batman film, and a live-action Jetsons film starring Jim Carrey.”

Here’s everything there is to know so far about the Game of Thrones movie.

When does Aegon’s Conquest premiere?

WBD listed Aegon’s Conquest as part of its programming slate “beyond 2027,” so we’re looking at a 2028 release date at the earliest.

Aegon’s Conquest will have a theatrical release. It’s based on the works of George R.R. Martin.

What is Aegon’s Conquest about?

Aegon’s Conquest will tell the story of how the Seven Kingdoms were brought together under Targaryen rule.

Aegon the Conqueror founded the Targaryen dynasty. Before him, Westeros was comprised of seven independent kingdoms with different rulers. Aegon used his fearsome dragon, Balerion the Black Dread (whose skull is kept in the Red Keep in House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones), and the help of his two sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, and their dragons, Vhagar and Meraxes, to conquer six of the seven kingdoms and unite them as one.

Dorne was the only kingdom the Targaryens couldn’t win. It stayed independent for around 200 years after Aegon’s conquest before eventually joining the Seven Kingdoms through marriage and political alliances during the reign of King Daeron II Targaryen.

Vhagar still lives in House of the Dragon, and she’s the largest dragon in Westeros. But Balerion was bigger. Viserys (Paddy Considine) was Balerion’s last rider.

What Game of Thrones spinoffs are in the works?

Before Aegon’s Conquest, there will be A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2, premiering in 2027, and the final season of House of the Dragon, premiering in 2028.

The Jon Snow Game of Thrones spinoff series starring Kit Harington has been shelved.

“It’s open knowledge that we tried to make a Jon Snow show for a little while, and just couldn’t. My main thing is not wanting to go there and do an injustice by the character,” Harington said during a Motor City Comic Con panel in May 2026, per ScreenRant. “I think he ended well. I think that he went where he was meant to. So if you pick him up again, it needs to be for the right reasons.”

Harington feels “there was something left to say” with Jon Snow and that a series about the Stark and Targaryen character “would be interesting,” but ultimately, “We couldn’t find the right thing. So we put it down. For the moment. Maybe there’ll be a time…you know, he’s not dead, and that’s the amazing thing, is that he could be picked up again.”
