Caitriona Balfe is setting her first major TV role post-Outlander as she teams up with Alfonso Cuarón for Apple TV‘s Ascension.
The star is trading in the romantic fantasy drama genre for what is being described as a psychological horror thriller series. What is Ascension about?
Ascension is inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days and follows Rose, a recently divorced mother and relentless documentarian who has a knack for uncovering people’s truths, but struggles with facing her own. When Rose begins working on a project revolving around a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she begins to find refuge in its teachings, until she realizes something evil is lurking beneath.

The show explores evil and innocence and asks the question: How far will you go and what will you sacrifice to protect the ones you love, even when you may be the biggest threat?

Who is making Ascension?
Ascension is hailing from Alfonso Cuarón. The series is being co-showrun by Natalie Erika James and Christian White and is written by James, White, Alfonso Cuarón, and Carlos Cuarón. James will also serve as the lead director on the project hailing from Apple Studios. In addition to starring in the show, Balfe executive produces Ascension with Alfonso Cuarón, who has an overall deal with Apple through his production company Esperanto Filmjo. Other executive producers include Gabriela Rodriguez, Richard Schwartz, Carlos Cuarón, Steve Golin, David Levine, Zack Hayden, James, and White. The series is produced by Anonymous Content.
