Based on John Steinbeck‘s 1952 American classic, Netflix’s miniseries is a contemporary take on the biblical tale of Cain and Abel through two generations of Trask brothers, Adam (Mike Faist) and Charles (Christopher Abbott), and Adam’s twins Cal (Joseph Zada) and Aron Trask (Joe Anders), set in California’s Salinas Valley between time of the Civil War and World War I.
Executive producer and star Florence Pugh steps into the role of Adam’s wife Cathy, who stirs up trouble through manipulation and avoidance. The seven-episode series takes us through decades of Cathy and the Trask brothers’ lives as they collide with Samuel Hamilton (Ciarán Hinds), who acts as their moral compass.
Writer and executive producer Zoe Kazan took on this adaptation with one thing in mind: She wanted to tell the whole story, which she believes was skipped in previous adaptations, including the 1995 film East of Eden directed by her grandfather, Elia Kazan. Kazan promises everything in the series has a root in the book, and she explores the novel’s nuanced themes of generational trauma, the definition of free will, and the fall of man.
