It’s been nearly a decade since we’ve seen Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman share the screen as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson on the hit BBC series, but they’re together again on Friday, July 10, at Wimbledon.
The Sherlock stars were seen sitting together, with Cumberbatch’s wife, Sophie Hunter, between them, in the royal box on Day 12 of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London. Over the course of four seasons and one special, from 2010 to 2017, Cumberbatch and Freeman starred as the iconic sleuth and doctor who lived at 221B Baker Street and solved crimes together. Following the end of the series, fans, of course, wanted a fifth season, but the two stars had different — and very public — opinions on the matter, in part due to fans’ reactions. And it has gotten to the point that it’s clear there’s not going to be another season, so it’s extra special to see these two together again.
When TV Insider caught up with Mark Gatiss, who co-created the series with Steven Moffat, in January for his new British drama Bookish, it was 10 years since he’d won the Emmy for the aforementioned special, The Abominable Bride. “Sherlock is a huge part of my life and career. I’m forever grateful for it. I think it’s also strange that it has been nearly 10 years since we stopped. But it still resonates in extraordinary ways and keeps coming back,” he noted.
Gatiss added, “Martin messaged me out of the blue the other day. He was in a hotel in Croatia or something. He said, ‘Hey, I’m just watching Sherlock. Very proud.’ It was very touching. It is very lovely to hear that.”
