Will Trent featured a shocking loss in Season 4 when series original Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn) was killed off. The character, who was deputy director of the GBI, had narrowly survived two very close calls — that is, being shot while protecting Angie (Erika Christensen) in the headquarters hostage crisis in Season 3 and then when an active shooter attacked the mall store she was shopping at in the most recent season. However, she was suddenly murdered by the goons of Adelaide (Mallory Jansen) while investigating Will’s (Ramón Rodríguez) serial killer stalker and found dead in the street.
Immediately after Amanda’s death in the series, though, the creatives hinted that it might not be the end of Amanda, one way or another. Cocreator Liz Heldens told Variety, “That’s always a little comforting that we have a mechanism by which we could bring people back if Will needs to work something out,” in reference to the show’s established tradition of sometimes bringing back ghosts — like Will’s mother and her killer James Ulster (Greg Germann) — to serve as guides for Will, for better and for worse.
Indeed, shortly after Amanda’s death, the character did return as a figment of Will’s dreamworld imagination for another episode that allowed him to finally confront his grief over the loss. However, that time, she was portrayed by Sydney Park, returning as the young Amanda Wagner, a role she’d previously played in flashbacks. Whether Sonja Sohn ever returns to the show to reprise her role as Will’s mentor and quasi-parental figure remains to be seen, though.
Sohn has since spoken out about the character’s death and even promised further explanation about what really happened behind the scenes. However, the actress has also encouraged fans to “let old girl go.”
