Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle is reacting to Ted Lasso‘s latest episode, “Richmond’s Got Talent,” which pays homage to her famous Britain’s Got Talent audition, which went viral across the globe.
In the installment, which is part of Ted Lasso‘s triumphant Season 4 return, Ted (Jason Sudeikis) and fellow coaches Alice (Tanya Reynolds) and Beard (Brendan Hunt) prepare for open tryouts as they work to fill out the Lady Greyhounds team roster. While discussing tryouts, Alice makes a reference to Susan Boyle, which Beard appreciates, but leaves Ted confused.
“What’s a Susan Boyle?” he asks Alice with genuine interest. She tells him that if she has to learn his references, then he must also learn hers, and so he later educates himself on the legendary Boyle and her breakthrough moment. How Ted managed to go so long without seeing Boyle sing “I Dreamed a Dream” on stage for the judges of the competition series remains a mystery.
When Beard approaches Ted later in the episode, he observes the coach watching something on his phone. As he asks Ted if he’s okay, he answers, “Yeah, just finally watching this Susan Boyle audition. She’s the most talented woman on Earth.”
“So true,” Beard responds. By the time the episode concludes, Boyle’s singing of the Les Misérables song plays over the closing credits, reminding anyone who has seen the epic audition of its greatness.
For those who may be closer to Ted’s understanding of Boyle, the singer made a splash in 2009 when her audition for Britain’s Got Talent went viral at the age of 47. Now, at 65, Boyle is donning a new look, but is no less humble than she was during her audition as she offers Ted “cheers” in response to the sweet shoutout moment in Ted Lasso.
