After mysterious hints of past turmoil in the first three episodes, what happened in Portland was finally revealed in Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Episode 4. Tatiana Maslany‘s Paula, now a single mom, was in a horrible accident when she was married to Karl (Jake Johnson), but as series creator David J. Rosen tells us, “The question is: Is what she’s saying true or not?” Rosen and the Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed cast explained this pivotal moment to us in the TV Insider studio at ATX TV Festival 2026. Warning: Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed spoilers ahead!
The episode flashes back to when Paula and Karl were still married and living in Portland, Oregon, with their daughter, Hazel (Nola Wallace). Paula and Karl’s sex life was struggling, hinting at more strife in their marriage at large, and then Paula sees Karl flirting with Mallory (Jessy Hodges) at a kid’s birthday party their daughter is attending. Paula takes Hazel home, and in her upset state, there’s some kind of car accident that ends up killing their antagonistic neighbor in their driveway. Karl was still at the party with Mallory when it happened, and Mallory came with him when Paula called for help.
“That scene between the three of us is very much like there’s so many hidden dynamics, or not-so-hidden dynamics, happening,” Maslany explains in the video above. “Everyone’s holding a secret of a sort of complication that makes that moment so intense, outside of the fact that there’s a dead body on the ground.”
We will learn more about this as the season goes on, and as Rosen says, “the question is: Is what she’s saying true or not?” Maslany says this was the first instance of a common habit of Paula’s in the present-day timeline of the show.
“It’s the first time we see really Paula step out of her body a little bit,” Maslany explains. “There’s this motif that we started playing with, which was her kind of checking out and the feeling of what is she thinking, what’s going on, and this survival thing that kicks in for her.”
Johnson says that the Portland accident is what made Karl start to make moves to end their marriage.
“I think it solidifies for Karl that he’s made the right call, because from his point of view, I don’t think he believes what she’s saying [about the accident],” Johnson explains. “He knows she can be erratic.”
Rosen adds: “What we’re seeing at the beginning of Portland is a marriage that has obviously had a lot come before we’ve been there, and is two people kind of trying to make it work, but one of them already has one foot out of it, and this is the final nail in the coffin, if I may beat a dead horse.”
In the present day, as Paula is trying to solve the mystery of camboy Trevor’s (Brandon Flynn) death, viewers see his actual killer, boyfriend Dennis (Murray Bartlett), come up with his alibi in an interrogation scene. Bartlett reveals what we’re learning about Dennis in this moment.
“As you see him more, you realize he’s a chameleon,” Bartlett says. “He adapts to whatever situation he’s in to get what he wants and to give the people what they want to see, with the objective of getting what he wants. He’s sort of a master at that.”
Dennis is determined to make sure that professional fact-checker Paula doesn’t figure out he killed Trevor. The fixer arrives at Paula’s place at the end of Episode 4, and Bartlett says above that “the chase is on” from this point on.
