The newest HBO hit series is not one that many were expecting to be as good as it is. Video game adaptation The Last Of Us is making waves around the world right now as a quality show. The popularity of the video game series the show adapts along with good word of mouth are making this a hit. Just 3 episodes in, the popularity of should make it no surprise to anyone that we already have Season 2 confirmation from HBO. Let’s get into the details of the confirmation and when we can expect from Season 2.

Season 2

The Last Of Us Season 1 is set to be 9 episodes in total. With only 3 episodes out as of the 29th, that means we’re getting this Season 2 renewal less than halfway through the first season. This is not so surprising considering the massive acclaim for the show right out of the gate. It has a near-unanimously perfect Rotten Tomatoes critic and fan score. 97% with critics and 96% with fans. This is not only remarkably high for any show, but the highest rating ever for a video game adaptation. Video game adaptations have notoriously been low quality and largely panned in the past.

The show also saw the largest audience growth between Episodes 1 and 2 in HBO’s history. All of these achievements in just a handful of episodes make it impossible for HBO to say no to a Season 2. Neil Druckmann, show creative producer and lead writer for the game series, got to comment on the Season 2 renewal.

“I’m humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey. The collaboration with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast & crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations. Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two! On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog & PlayStation, thank you!”

The Last Of Us is a bit of an oddity for HBO Max. They’ve never really gone into video game adaptations in the past. It makes sense given their track record that they’d be one of the first to give us a quality adaptation. It also makes sense that they’d want to delve further into nerd-culture adaptations after the success of shows like Game Of Thrones and House Of The Dragon.

Later in 2023, they’re also releasing an adaptation of Dead Boy Detectives, a Neil Gaiman comic adaptation. They’re clearly hoping for something similar to Gaiman’s Sandman adaptation on Netflix. Hopefully, they continue to push out quality adaptations for the geeks of the world.

The first few episodes of The Last Of Us Season 1 are available on HBO Max now. The season continues to air new episodes weekly. Season 2 will hopefully follow within 12 to 16 months of the Season 1 finale.
