What To Know
- An extended cut of The Rookie Season 8, Episode 10 will be available.
- Get details on the new scenes and find out why it’s being released.
This might make the wait until the midseason for The Rookie Season 9 a bit easier: Fans will be able to see about five and a half minutes of new footage this year.
Those extra scenes come from a Season 8 episode, the 10th of the season, “His Name Was Martin,” one of the series’ standouts. It will be available to stream on Hulu on Monday, July 20, and fans will be able to access it on The Rookie page by looking in Extras. According to Deadline, the new scenes are: “action sequences as the team tries to evade the aggressive, zombie-like workers, and a cut-for-time scene that would give context to Lucy and Tim’s (Eric Winter) emotional conversation at the end of the episode in which he consoles her.”
TV Insider has learned that the episode will be available through Monday, September 21.
Showrunner Alexi Hawley, who wrote the episode, also released a statement revealing why this will be available.
“One of the many fun things about making The Rookie is that we have such a broad playground story and tone-wise. For 810, I knew I wanted to make something fun and scary and unexpectedly emotional. But tension takes time to play out on screen, and I found myself in the editing room with hard choices to make. I can count the number of scenes we’ve dropped in eight seasons on one hand (maybe two?), but I was up against a wall on this one,” he shared (via Deadline).

He continued, “Network run times are set in stone. But Hulu’s are not. So, I picked up the phone and pitched the idea of releasing an extended cut as a reward to our amazing fans, who are so invested in the show. Now they’ll be able to go deeper into the character journeys (especially for Tim and Lucy) and see the previously unaired scenes that enhance the episode in a unique way.”
“His Name Was Martin” sees Nolan (Nathan Fillion), Nyla (Mekia Cox), and Miles (Deric Augustine), along with Dash (Beckett Hawley), respond to a call at Westview after a remediation crew hadn’t been heard from in a day. Everyone there has been affected by chemicals on site that make them violent (and zombie-like). In trying to contain the situation and stay alive, Lucy (Melissa O’Neil), who arrives to help with Celina (Lisseth Chavez), ends up in a life-or-death fight where she is forced to stab her attacker. He dies, and the title of the episode comes from her conversation with Nolan as her union rep at the end.
Subsequent episodes explore how that trauma affects Lucy.
“That was important. She had never taken a life in the line of duty, and so that felt like we needed to … I mean, a lot of cop shows, they just throw bullets around and then go to lunch and stuff like that. We walk that line or try and walk that line on an action-forward show and the repercussions of that. But the fact that it was a knife, that it was much more primal, that it was … All that was on purpose,” Hawley told TV Insider later in the season while also discussing the finale cliffhanger, in which Lucy and Tim were kidnapped.
“And then in the aftermath of that, it’s not like Lucy hasn’t gone through some incredible trauma. The being put in the barrel and all that was deeply traumatic. So she does have some resources on dealing with trauma that a lot of people don’t. But that being said, it’s just different, especially because this person was not in their right mind and all that kind of stuff. So yeah, but I appreciate that because that was important to us to try and really honor that journey.”
The Rookie will return for its ninth season in 2027 and be joined by a new spinoff, The Rookie: North, starring Jay Ellis, in ABC’s midseason lineup.
