- Tim Allen gets candid about why a Home Improvement reboot or revival hasn’t happened yet.
- Learn more about his TV sons’ “personality problems” he claims are getting in the way.
The long-rumored Home Improvement reboot doesn’t seem like it will be arriving in the near future after Tim Allen gives an update on the project.
The actor, who is currently promoting Toy Story 5 and stars in ABC‘s hit sitcom Shifting Gears, spoke candidly on the matter in an interview with Us Weekly, revealing the real reason the reboot is “stuck” and not moving forward.
“They keep talking about how it could move forward, but they get stuck [because] there are some personality problems right now with the boys,” Allen shared, referring to his TV sons.
As fans may know, Zachery Ty Bryan, who played Brad in the series, was arrested in November 2025 over a domestic violence violation and was previously arrested for suspicion of DUI, felony assault, and robbery in 2024. Meanwhile, Jonathan Taylor Thomas has essentially retired from acting.
“They’ve got their own issues,” Allen continued. “I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them. That’s a little challenging right now, to put it mildly.”

In 2024, Patricia Richardson, who played Allen’s onscreen wife, Jill, spoke about the possibility of a reboot or revival on the Back to the Best podcast, and said, “I would not want to… I mean, Zach [Ty Bryan] is now a felon… Taran [Noah Smith] hasn’t acted since he left the show… Jonathan is not really interested in acting… and we don’t have Wilson,” she added in reference to the late Earl Hindman.
In February 2026, it was announced that Bryan would serve a 16-month sentence for his DUI charge.
Home Improvement aired for eight seasons on ABC between 1991 and 1999, and was nominated for several Emmys over its run. What do you think of Allen’s sentiment about the reboot being stuck? Sound off in the comments section, and let us know if you’d want to see the Taylor family back on your TV.
