Carson Daly Discussed An Upcoming Reality Show, Causing Him To Reenact A Certain Tradition On Today
Daly first became known to many as a VJ on MTV’s Total Request Live from 1998 to 2003. In 2002, he joined NBC, hosting Last Call with Carson Daly until 2019.
In 2011, Daly became a host on The Voice. By 2013, he joined Today as a social media correspondent, with him eventually becoming a co-host.
During a recent “PopStart” segment on Today, Daly discussed how Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are working together on a new reality series that will explore them becoming the co-owners of an Australian sailing team. He shared, “While they were down in Hugh’s homeland, the new team convinced them to partake in a sacred Aussie tradition called the ‘shoey.’”
As shown in a clip, this was a tradition of drinking beer from a shoe. Daly then asked his co-hosts, “Have you guys ever done a shoey? I’ve never done a shoey either.”
Daly proceeded to take off his own shoe, fill it with beer, and chug it down. Al Roker and Craig Melvin appeared grossed out by the scene. Some of Daly’s other co-stars, however, who included Jenna Bush Hager, Savannah Guthrie, and Sheinelle Jones, cheered him on.
While out on the 30 Rockefeller Plaza, Daly joked, “Next time, I’m gonna drink it out of Savannah’s shoe and call it a ‘chooey,’ because she has a Jimmy Choo shoe. So, I’ll do a shoey and a chooey.”
Some Fans Noted That They Were Reminded Of Carson’s TRL Days
Savannah Guthrie then jokingly took off one of her heels and offered it to Daly. He then joked, “Do you know what I have to do to stick around with these fine, hard-hitting journalists? Some interview presidents, some do shoeies and chooey. Gotta earn your keep, everybody.”
Drinking from shoes has a long history to it. At times, it has been a hazing punishment or a party game. In the 20th century, drinking champagne from a lady’s served as a sign of decadence. In 1957, Julie Andrews famously drank champagne from a replica glass slipper after appearing in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s live broadcast of Cinderella, originating the title role.
Today’s official Instagram page shared a clip of Daly’s viral moment, sharing that he took another shot as the show cut to a commercial break. After finishing the drink, he put his shoe back on. A caption read, “Ladies and Gentlemen, Carson Daly doing a shoey at 8:25 a.m.”
