Notably, this also comes out after Guthrie made an abrupt exit from the show this past May. However, an explanation was given by one of her co-hosts.
Laura Jarrett Recently Filled In For Savannah Guthrie On Today
Guthrie is a journalist known for serving as a co-anchor on NBC News’ Today, a position she’s held since 2012. She previously joined the network in 2007 as a correspondent.
Earlier this year, Savannah’s mother, Nancy, disappeared, drawing national attention. At the time, Savannah stepped away from her duties on Today, which included covering the 2026 Winter Olympics. However, she made her return to the network back in April.
During a recent episode of the show, Guthrie wasn’t sitting in her usual spot. Her co-star Craig Melvin was joined by another familiar face. This was Weekend Today host Laura Jarrett.
Melvin started the show by welcoming viewers, “Thank you so much for starting your Friday. Starting your weekend. With us.”
Fans Were Recently Concerned After Guthrie Was Absent Back In May
At the time, some fans expressed concern for Guthrie, with some even asking if she regularly worked Fridays. Melvin explained that Guthrie was simply taking the day off, as he shared that Jarrett was filling “in for Savannah, who’s getting a head start on her weekend.”
Jarrett is a regular substitute on Today and is known to be close with her anchors. During her appearance, she shared that there was a special reason for her to be excited for the day’s episode: Lizzo would put on a performance later that morning.
Guthrie normally works on Fridays, as she typically anchors the program’s first two hours alongside Melvin. However, her work schedule has frequently fluctuated due to the current events surrounding her family. It is believed that NBC has shared their support for her during this time and made it clear that she has permission to step away if need be over updates concerning her family.
As previously reported, fans saw Guthrie make an unexpected exit from the show last month. After she was absent from the May 6 episode, Melvin told viewers, “Savannah had to leave a little early. She’ll be right back tomorrow, though.” However, Guthrie returned the following day. At the time, a source told Page Six that it was due to “some sort of appointment, and her exit had nothing to do with her mom.”
