Sheinelle Jones shared a heartfelt update with fans after enjoying a long weekend.
Jones was absent from Today on Monday, June 15, though the reason for her absence was not revealed. While Jenna Bush Hager spent the morning interviewing the New York Knicks on Today With Jenna & Sheinelle, Jones took time to reflect on her accomplishments and journey with grief one year after her husband, Uche Ojeh, passed away.
“My friend told me I was overdue for a check-in … so I figured I’d just share some of the recent pics on my phone… kind of a snap shot at life lately,” Jones captioned her Monday Instagram upload. “From the sidelines at games, to the beach, book tour, and the office. It feels like the last few months have been some of the *best* of times, with some hard moments in between; perhaps that’s the new normal.”
She continued, “For anyone in this first year or so of grief … I just want you to know that I see you, and I hope you see me too. We can and must still have beautiful days filled with new wins, joy and hopefully peace that passes all understanding. Love you guys.”
Fans shared their appreciation for Jones’ update in the post’s comments, as well as their own experiences with grief. “7 months without my husband. I do see you, too,” one user wrote. “Sometimes I feel a tiny moments of joy and know someday I will start feel larger pockets of joy. In time…”
Another added, “You are such a beautiful inspiration!!” Someone else shared, “I’m glad to see this for you And yes thank you for uplifting others that have similar experiences. much love.” A different person posted, “Every day I realize more and more how you are meant for a much bigger purpose. The beautiful times make that sad time maybe a little more bearable. You are a class act who will and has been doing great things.”
Starting in late 2024, Jones took several months off from Today to deal with a private family health matter. In May 2025, it was announced that Ojeh had died at the age of 45 following a private battle with brain cancer. She returned to the NBC morning show in September 2025 and began her role as Bush Hager’s fourth hour of Today co-host in January.
Along with starting her new TV role, Jones released her first-ever book, Through Mom’s Eyes, in April. The book was initially set to be released last year but was delayed due to Ojeh’s health struggles.
Last month, Jones opened up on Jenna & Sheinelle about celebrating her first Mother’s Day since Ojeh’s passing. “I think when you have firsts — and Mother’s Day was a first for me since Uche passed — you fortify your heart, right?” she said on May 11. “Christmas and Easter, you kind of fortify yourself. But there are some holidays that you don’t see coming that are harder than you think. Mother’s Day was brutal.”
Luckily, Jones found a “silver lining” in the holiday thanks to her kids — Kayin, Clara, and Uche — whom she shared with her late husband. “My little guy had a game at 9 a.m. Kayin had a game at 7 p.m. Clara had dance. So, it was like, I couldn’t stay in bed,” she explained. “And then watching Clara dance and my little guy’s been injured and it was his first game back, and then watching Kayin, he played on the higher team, I was like, ‘OK. It’s gonna be OK.’”
