According to Ty Pennington, the future of HGTV‘s Battle on the Beach was never set in stone.
Earlier this week, the network announced that the competition series will return for its fifth season later this year, with Pennington serving as a mentor alongside Mika Kleinschmidt and Sarah Baeumler. The news came as a surprise, as former star Alison Victoria previously announced that Battle on the Beach had been canceled.
“Battle on the Beach did not get picked back up, which is sad because it was like adult spring break,” she said in a July 2025 episode of her Pap Smear Podcast. Battle on the Beach was one of several HGTV shows to get the axe last year, including Bargain Block, Married to Real Estate, Izzy Does It, Farmhouse Fixer, Christina on the Coast, and The Flipping El Moussas.
However, Pennington exclusively told TV Insider that the show’s reported cancellation was never official. “I’ve been in the television industry for a long time. I just know when it comes to TV, nothing’s really canceled,” he explained. “I think that’s a big word. Sometimes, people are just re-evaluating what is doing well, what they know they want to see more of.”
Pennington noted that fan interest in Battle on the Beach remained strong despite reports of the event’s cancellation. “I think that fans really like that show because you really see people working very hard with their own hands. So, I think it’s one of those shows that you can tell the aggravation and the frustration of competing on a show like that, because you literally see them screaming in agony, not only with each other, but I think just at how hard it actually is,” he stated. “And I know that those kinds of shows resonate with fans, because we’ve all been there. We’ve all taken on a project where we’re like, ‘Why did I say yes to this?’”

Teasing the new season, Pennington said he loved getting to work again onscreen with Kleinschmidt and Baeumler. “I love to work with people that not only are a lot of fun, they’re funny, but they also really know what they’re doing,” he gushed. “But with mentoring, what I’m excited for these ladies is — and they found out this season — that mentoring is sort of more difficult than being the designer and being the person in charge of the project, because it’s sort of out of your control. It’s like being a parent. You have to watch them. You try and guide them, but you can’t change what they choose. You can just hope that they choose wisely, and that’s got to be what it’s like to be a parent.”
Season 5 of Battle on the Beach will see the trio mentor two-person teams as they transform run-down beachfront properties into dream vacation homes. Renovation Aloha‘s Tristyn and Kamohai Kalama will serve as judges.
During filming, Pennington asked his mother, Yvonne, for advice on working with his team, mother-daughter duo Michelle Mueller and Sydney Lorence. “[They were] having difficulty agreeing on design, and [they were] having some meltdowns about who’s listening, and all the above, all the communication with a mother and offspring,” he explained.
Pennington continued, “I honestly asked her advice about, like, ‘What should I do about trying to make sure this person believes in themselves?’ And so, she gave me great advice, which is, ‘Let them fail. Let them learn from succeeding and failing because you need both to actually gain confidence in yourself, to learn what not to do next time. So, even today, I’m still getting good tips and advice about how to work with anyone, especially a mother-daughter combo.”
Off the small screen, Pennington was inspired by his mother’s struggles with bronchiectasis to raise awareness for respiratory health through Insmed’s Suspect BE campaign.
“Most people know me as the guy that moves the bus, that’s known for building homes for people — but what a lot of people don’t realize is I’m also a caregiver for my mom,” he shared. “My mom has been dealing with respiratory issues for almost as long as I can remember. She was diagnosed with bronchiectasis almost 20 years ago.”
Like his mother, Pennington noted that people often don’t realize their respiratory issues could be signs of a more pressing health issue. “That’s why I’ve teamed up with Insmed. We’ve got a campaign called SuspectBE.com, which is really advising people,” he told TV Insider. “If the symptoms keep coming back, if they don’t seem to be getting better, then maybe get a CT scan, talk to a pulmonologist, and just find out what’s going on.”
