Tyla Abercrumbie Pitches Mary Jo Connection to Vance

What To Know

  • Tyla Abercrumbie, who plays Mary Jo on NCIS: Origins, pitches a storyline connecting her character to Vance from the mothership.
  • Plus, why Abercrumbie didn’t want her character to have a husband.

Despite being across two timelines, NCIS and the prequel, NCIS: Origins, have crossed over already, with a major event last season. And it’s possible the series could do so again. In fact, Tyla Abercrumbie, who plays Mary Jo on Origins, pitched a connection to a major part of the mothership on the Tuesday, July 14 episode of the NCIS: Partners & Probies podcast, hosted by Brian Dietzen and Diona Reasonover.

The podcast ends with “Probie Questions,” which come from the fans, and Dietzen asked Abercrumbie, “Will Mary Jo be integrated into the current NCIS mothership at any point?” Not only can she see that happening, but she also pitched something that could easily just come up in conversation on her show.

“I thought about this. I thought about Rocky Carroll. Mary Jo is related in some way, where somebody says to me at some point, ‘What’s your uncle’s name?’ And my character says his name, and you know that he’s in the future,” Abercrumbie detailed. “I talk about him at some point. Because he’s got the age on him that he could be related to me.” (Since Carroll’s Vance was killed off in NCIS Episode 500, this would also be a great way to honor the character.)

Reasonover then suggested that Kasie and Mary Jo could be related. “Maybe Kasie’s dad knew Mary Jo,” she said.

Abercrumbie picked up on that, adding and talking to Reasonover, “And somehow we meet your parents … one of your parents or something like that. I feel like they can make that happen somehow. It’s a flashback thing.”

The NCIS: Origins star also shared that before it was revealed that her character was divorced, she told showrunners Gina Lucita Monreal (who will not be back for Season 3) and David J. North that she didn’t want a husband.

“I thought, ‘The minute this always happens, the minute a woman gets a husband, all her conversation is about her husband,’” she explained. “‘I’ve got to go home, I’ve got to cook Fred dinner. Fred didn’t buy me nothing for my anniversary. Fred, Fred, Fred.’ So, I was like, I don’t want a husband.”

Reasonover then chimed in with, “Or she’s dead. Seriously, being a wife on a procedural is the terrible life insurance policy.”

Abercrumbie explained, “I love Mary Jo’s power. So, I was like, I don’t want a husband. And they were like, ‘OK, but how about a divorce?’ And I said, ‘I can do that. I can be divorced.’”
