Netflix is expanding its spy series portfolio with Bannerman, an adaptation of the John R. Maxim novels that’s being coproduced with AMC.
The streamer has announced that the new drama series received a series order, along with key details about what to expect from the show.
Here’s what we know about Bannerman so far.
When will Bannerman premiere?
The series, a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Netflix and AMC, will first premiere on AMC in the U.S. and Canada and will subsequently be available on Netflix, 90 days after the season finale airs on AMC. Netflix and AMC will both premiere each episode in Australia, New Zealand, and Spain, and Netflix will host the series everywhere else worldwide. An exact premiere date has not been revealed just yet.
Who will star in Bannerman?
As of now, the cast for the series has not yet been announced, but what we do know is that Craig Silverstein is serving as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, with Shane Black also writing, directing, and executive producing. Black cowrote the first episode with Silverstein and is expected to direct the first two episodes of the series. Also executive producing are Greg Nicotero and Brian Witten.
What is Bannerman about?
Based on Maxim’s novel series, the series’ description tells us, “Paul Bannerman, a lethal covert operative, convinces a group of the world’s most deadly assassins to quit the spy game for a chance to lead normal lives in the suburbs of Connecticut. Old enemies, bad habits, a paranoid government, and an unrelenting ex-cop will make retirement their most difficult mission yet.”
In a statement, AMC boss Dan McDermott said of the series, “Bannerman is a smart, high-octane thrill ride of a series, powered by an extraordinary creative team. This is the perfect premium drama to kick off our first coproduction with Netflix, and we are thrilled to continue evolving and expanding our partnership by jointly developing and producing select original series for our respective platforms.”
What should I know about the Bannerman books?
There are five books in the Bannerman spy series by John R. Maxim. The first book, The Bannerman Solution, was published in 1989 and finds Paul Bannerman being sent to the town of Westport, Connecticut, to retire alongside other former deadly assassins. However, there’s no life of peace in store for him; soon, he and his fellow retirees are targeted by the government.
The second book, The Bannerman Effect, hit shelves in 1990 and found Paul fighting to save his girlfriend’s life from his former employers. Bannerman’s Law, released in 1991, centered on Bannerman’s colleague Carla, seeking revenge for the murder of her sister, a film student who discovered the truth about a mental institution for celebrities. Fourth on the list is Bannerman’s Promise, released in 1993, which follows in the aftermath of an assassination by Carla. And finally, Bannerman’s Ghosts, published in 2003, brings Bannerman back into action again after a billionaire plots to have a biological weapon that could destroy everything.
