Where Did ‘Grantchester’ Leave Off? Refresh Your Memory Before Final Season

Grantchester first premiered in the U.S. in January 2015. Eleven years later, it’s gearing up for the final season, premiering June 14 on PBS. As teased in the Season 11 trailer, the new episodes will address the cliffhanger about Alphy’s (Rishi Nair) mom from the Season 10 finale. If you need a refresher before the charming series returns for its final run, we’ve got you covered with this recap of where Grantchester left off.

How did Grantchester Season 10 end?

The Season 10 finale was all about reconnecting with your family. Season 11 will explore this topic further by asking what makes a family.

The last time we saw Geordie (Robson Green), he was sharing a moving moment with his young son, David (Carter-Jae O’Neil). Geordie had a harsh reaction when he saw his son wearing a dress at home earlier in the season, but his experiences with all of his past vicars have helped the detective tap into his emotions more. Geordie took David fishing in the finale and told him that he loved him.

Grantchester showrunner Daisy Coulam told TV Insider, “We always knew we wanted [Geordie] to say to his son ‘I love you,’ because it would be such a big thing in the 1960s for a man to tell his son he loves him, and it took him eight episodes to get there! But that story is really about a parent’s connection with a child. How do you connect with your child when you don’t feel like you have anything in common? It’s about finding the love for your child when they’re not exactly who you want them to be. It’s only now that we can do that with Geordie. Through all his vicars, he’s learned how to express himself.”

After learning more about his mother and why she put him up for adoption, Alphy decided he wanted to meet her in Season 10 so that he could better understand himself. The season ended with him knocking on what he believed to be her door. Coulam told us that yes, viewers will meet Alphy’s mom in Grantchester‘s final season, but it’s not necessarily going to be what the vicar expects.

“It probably won’t go smoothly,” Coulam said. “We wanted to do something realistic about how children and parents, despite having a blood connection, sometimes it’s tricky — if you’ve not been in each other’s lives — to find that connection. There’s almost a closeness in age between them that gives it a very interesting dynamic.”

Daniel (Oliver Dimsdale) had a negative experience with his mother in the finale, one that prompted him to fiercely defend his relationship with Leonard (Al Weaver). Daniel had recently reunited with his mother, Clara, and she came to visit in the finale. While Daniel was elsewhere, Clara told Leonard that she and her husband blame him for “corrupting” their son into homosexuality. Leonard was hesitant to tell Daniel what she said. Jack (Nick Brimble) told Daniel instead. This news made Daniel tell his mother that he didn’t want her in his life if she wasn’t going to support his love for Leonard. He then broke a family heirloom teapot that his mother gave him.

“We wanted Daniel to prove his worth to Leonard because Leonard has put himself on the line for Daniel so many times: gone to prison for him and saved him from a terrible religious cult,” Coulam told us. “It felt like it was Daniel’s turn to sacrifice something. He has to choose Leonard over the ease of having his family back.”

On a happier note, there was a wedding in the finale. Bradley Hall and Melissa Johns‘ characters, Larry and Jennifer, tied the knot. In Season 11, they’ll be having a baby, according to Coulam. The show worked Johns’ real-life pregnancy into the plot of the show. “Art imitating life,” Coulam said.

What happens in Grantchester‘s final season?

Grantchester Season 11 is set in the summer of 1963 in the fictional eponymous town in England. Alphy Kottaram is learning more about his past, mainly through his new relationship with his biological mother. He starts to consider what his life could have looked like with different circumstances, making him question his identity and his belief system. His relationship with Meg (Christie Russell-Brown, the Bishop’s daughter) is also still ongoing.

Here’s the rest of the Grantchester Season 11 description: “Geordie Keating, for once, is positively brimming with bonhomie! He’s learned to weather the storms of life and is enjoying a time of relative peace. Cathy’s happy now that CeCe’s Fashion Boutique is a success, and the kids are old enough to look after themselves! But then, out of the blue, the Chief Superintendent comes to Geordie with a beguiling offer. It could be a chance for Geordie to finally be in charge, but it could also mean an end of his crime-solving days. And his crime-solving partnership with Alphy… During a quiet period at the halfway house, Leonard finds himself with time on his hands and a chance to take stock of his own life and whether he’s doing enough with it. When one of Daniel’s neighbors becomes ill, Leonard is drawn into helping care for the neighbor’s son, Raymond — and discovers a paternal side to himself he never knew he had. In Season 11, everyone will question the paths they are on, and some huge decisions will be made. This season will look at family, forgiveness, identity, and faith — big changes are coming to Grantchester…”
