Will ‘Banshee’ Come Back for Season 5? Showrunner Jonathan Tropper Has an Update

- Advertisment -

A little over 10 years ago, Cinemax’s Banshee came to an end, closing the chapter on one of television’s most explosive and underrated action dramas. Blending pulpy crime storytelling, brutal fight sequences, and surprisingly rich character development, the series built a devoted fan base during its four-season run and remains a cult favorite among viewers who continue to discover it years later.

The story follows a master thief (Antony Starr) who, upon arriving in Banshee, witnesses a violent confrontation at a local bar in which the town’s incoming, yet still unknown, new sheriff, Lucas Hood, is killed. To hide from a ruthless mob boss he double-crossed years earlier, the ex-con assumes the identity of Sheriff Lucas Hood. While posing as the lawman, “Lucas” discovers that Banshee is far from the peaceful oasis it appears to be and is instead a hotbed of corruption, crime, and power struggles. Chaos ensues.

Since leaving Banshee, Starr has gone on to fame and fortune as Homelander, a sociopathic superhero at the center of Prime Video’s hit series The Boys, which just finished after five seasons. Now that The Boys is over and done, and Starr is free, one has to wonder, will he ever wander back to the town of Banshee?

Here is everything we know…

How did Banshee end?

Lucas Hood discovers that Amish crime lord Kai Proctor’s (Ulrich Thomsen) fiercely loyal assistant, Clay Burton (Matthew Rauch), was the one who murdered his niece, Rebecca (Lili Simmons). Burton did it because he viewed Rebecca as a reckless liability to Proctor’s empire. In exchange for the lapse in judgment, bot-tie aficionado Burton is mangled and eventually killed.

Kai meets his end in a violent standoff with a cartel, going down in a blaze of glory, Tommy gun in hand.

Lucas shares a final, tearful goodbye with ex Carrie, a.ka. Ana (Ivana Miličević). He officially leaves the town of Banshee behind to start over in New York City, riding away on his motorcycle.

Will there be a Season 5 of Banshee?

TV Insider recently caught up with showrunner Jonathan Tropper — who cocreated Banshee with David Schickler — to discuss his show Your Friends & Neighbors and asked whether a fifth season could ever happen. Here’s what he had to say: “I get asked that a lot, and [Antony] and I still talk all the time, but you know, the fact is… that I don’t believe there’s any version where they’d let us.”

“I think that [with that] show, people have found it now, thanks to, I think, Ant being a bigger star, and the show being on HBO Max,” explained Tropper. “I don’t know that anyone looks at that and sees that it has the kind of audience where they’re like, ‘Yes, let’s do it again.’”

“It feels exhausting just even thinking about it, but most of the cast are still in touch, and obviously, I have a few of them on Your Friends & Neighbors. I speak to a lot of the cast pretty frequently, and we all kind of love it, but I think that was a moment in time for all of us, and I think it’d be really hard to replicate that again.”
