Will There Be a ‘Grantchester’ Season 12?

- Advertisment -

Grantchester returns for Season 11 this Sunday, June 14, on PBS, bringing Geordie Keating (Robson Green), vicar Alphy Kottaram (Rishi Nair), and their Grantchester community of characters back to the screen. The season is set in 1963, and one of its big thematic questions will be what makes a family. This question is posed through the introduction of Alphy’s biological mother, whom Alphy potentially met in the Season 10 finale cliffhanger.

Grantchester Season 11 will be the show’s last. For those who might be curious about why it’s ending, we’ve compiled what the cast and creators have said about it here.

Will there be a Grantchester Season 12?

Grantchester is ending with Season 11. The show first began in 2016 and has featured different actors playing the town’s vicars throughout the years (James Norton, Tom Brittney, and Rishi Nair). Each one has helped D.I. Keating grow as a person, and vice versa.

Why is Grantchester ending with Season 11?

Grantchester showrunner Daisy Coulam told TV Insider after the Season 10 finale that they envisioned Season 11 as the show’s last.

“From the time we started planning it, we were thinking of it as the last, and that we should go out on a high,” she said. “It’s been a good run and we’ve had such a lovely time.”

She noted that it was a combination of creative and financial decisions that led to their choice to bring it to a close.

“It was a little bit of both, but I would say [executive producer Emma Kingsman-Lloyd] took the choice, really. She said, ‘We want to keep making the show the best it can be. Now is the time to end it,’” Coulam explained. “We could keep going and I think we’d all love to keep going, but I think sometimes you just need to make the decision and then build the final [season] into the best it can be.”

Ahead of the Season 11 debut, Nair told us that “it was kind of bittersweet” to end the show.

“In any field, it’s the people that make your experience there, and the people at Grantchester really are like a family,” he continued. “But in terms of the show, I felt like maybe it was the right decision. The show’s in a really good place, and sometimes going out on a high is the smart move.”

When are new episodes of Grantchester?
