What To Know
- The Capture Season 3 was released on Peacock with a cliffhanger ending.
- The BBC has not yet renewed or canceled the series.
- Creator Ben Chanan originally intended Season 3 to be the final installment.
On June 18, all six episodes of The Capture Season 3 were released on Peacock. Fans of the long-awaited third installment are now dying to know: Will there be a The Capture Season 4? Let’s take a closer look.
The BBC conspiracy series stars Holliday Grainger as Detective Inspector Rachel Carey. In Season 1 — which premiered on Peacock in 2020 — Rachel uncovered the truth about Correction, a state-sponsored AI program that uses deepfake video and audio to frame innocent people. Season 2, which was released on the streaming platform in 2022, followed Rachel as she worked as an undercover investigator within the ranks of Correction to gather evidence and expose the government conspiracy.
Roughly three and a half years later, Season 3 of The Capture finally dropped on Peacock. Rachel was appointed the Acting Commander of Counter Terrorism, and she attempted to combat deepfakes with a new camera system called Operation Veritas. However, she also uncovered a powerful AI called Simon, as well as a secret organization called The Increment — the elite special forces unit aiding Correction. The story ends on a cliffhanger: Is Detective Superintendent Gemma Garland (Lia Williams) really dead?
With the true fate of Gemma in limbo and Correction still in operation, there is plenty still left to explore in a potential fourth season. However, BBC has neither renewed nor canceled The Capture as of writing — leaving the door wide open for Season 4.
The show’s creator, Ben Chanan, told Radio Times in March that he originally planned for Season 3 to be the final installment.
“I’d think to myself, as I was writing it, ‘This is going to be the last series.’ Now, is that true? I don’t know,” he said. “Never say never, right? But I think it’s really healthy to just write each series as if it’s going to be the last, that you’re not just hanging on to people for the sake of it.”
Of Frank Napier’s (Ron Perlman) Season 2 death, Chanan added, “I think actors don’t mind dying in a series, particularly if it’s probably going to be the last one, but also, if you give them a really good send off.”
In addition to Grainger, Williams, and Perlman, the series stars Ben Miles, Ginny Holder, Nigel Lindsay, Tessa Wong, Indira Varma, Paapa Essiedu, Killian Scott, Daisy Waterstone, and Callum Turner, among others.
