New HBO Max TV Shows and Movies in September 2026

HBO’s offerings this September couldn’t possibly be any different from each other. In terms of new TV, Sharon Horgan’s latest comedy series Youth follows a 50-year-old divorcée trying to figure it all out, while Rick Rubin’s Jay-Z-focused docuseries, JAŸ-Z in 8, deep dives into the rapper’s decades-long career. And if none of that interests you, new episodes of Lanterns drop every Sunday.

The biggest movie to come to HBO Max this month is undoubtedly Kane Parsons’ indie horror hit Backrooms, though Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James’ action movie Fuze also arrives on the platform in September.

HBO Max streams all HBO shows and movies when they debut on HBO. But not all shows and movies on HBO Max make it to HBO. We’ll designate HBO Max exclusives where appropriate.

JAŸ-Z in 8 (Sept. 18, HBO)

Rick Rubin is like the patron saint of male musicians over the age of 50. This isn’t an insult: The Rubin-produced Paul McCartney docuseries from 2021, McCartney 3, 2, 1, was quite good, and his latest black and white-shot deep dive into a very famous older guy’s music has potential to be just as interesting. In this eight-part series, Rubin sits down with his friend and collaborator Jay-Z for some long conversations about the rapper’s career and writing process. [Trailer] 

Youth (Sept. 20, HBO)

In this house, we love and support Sharon Horgan, which means that we’re keeping an eye on Youth, her latest comedy series. Here, Horgan plays Alex, a 50-year-old divorcée grappling with getting older while simultaneously trying to get her sexual groove back, take care of her ailing parents, and push her son toward adulthood. [Trailer]

Backrooms (Sept. 25, HBO Max)

Summer 2026 saw a pair of YouTubers-turned-filmmakers find success in the horror genre, with Curry Barker’s Obsession and Kane Parsons‘ Backrooms both doing numbers at the box office. Now, the liminal spaces of Backrooms can be explored on HBO Max. The film follows Chiwetel Ejiofor‘s Clark, who discovers a mysterious doorway in the basement of his struggling furniture store, leading him through an endless network of enigmatic interconnected rooms. [Trailer]
