Supernatural’s Jared Padalecki to Star in Walker, Texas Ranger Reboot

Breaking News

Texas forever! Supernatural star Jared Padalecki is lining up his next project after that long-running series ends next year: a reboot of the series Walker, Texas Ranger, which he’ll executive-produce and star in as the titular hero, according to Deadline. If it’s picked up, it will be his first role after the conclusion of his and Jensen Ackles‘ fantasy-horror series.

Walker, Texas Ranger ran for eight seasons on CBS from 1993 to 2001 and starred Chuck Norris as the iconic martial artist lawman Cordell Walker. Walker lived by the “Code of the Old West” and believed in treating people with respect and the occasional necessity of a good old-fashioned ass-kicking. The series was created by Albert S. Ruddy and Leslie Greif.

The new series is described as “a man finding his way back to his family while investigating crime in the state’s most elite unit,” per Deadline. “Our broken widower and father of two returns home to Austin after being undercover for two years for a high-profile case, only to discover that there’s even more work to be done at home. In a nod to the original series, Walker and his new partner — one of the only women in Texas Rangers’ history — are the modern-day heroes our world needs, following their own moral code to fight for what’s right, regardless of the rules.”

It’s reportedly being developed for The CW, home of Supernatural, or CBS, which has had success with similar reboots like Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver. It’s written and executive-produced by Valor‘s Anna Fricke. Other EPs include Lethal Weapon‘s Dan Lin and Padalecki himself. It will be a full reboot rather than a sequel series that would be directly connected to the original series, according to Deadline. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will be called Walker.

CBS Television Studios did not immediately return TV Guide’s request for comment.

Supernatural‘s 15th and final season premieres Thursday, Oct. 10 on the CW.

(Disclosure: TV Guide is owned by CBS Interactive, a division of CBS Corporation, one of the CW’s parent companies.)
