Netflix’s live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender returned for its second season in June 2026. Despite a relatively sub-par launch on the streamer for the sophomore season, the show’s upcoming third and final season has already wrapped filming, and will complete the story. When will it air on Netflix? And what can we expect? Here’s our big preview.

When it launched back in 2024, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of beloved Nickelodeon cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender was a major success. It debuted at No. 1 globally, drawing in over 20.1 million views. While a success commercially, the series garnered mixed ratings: many viewers criticised its heavily condensed story and darker, grittier tone. However, myriad viewers embraced the changes. The overall reception, combined with superb initial viewership, saw Netflix not only renew the series for another season, but for two more seasons, where it will reach its natural conclusion.

Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back. Season 2 kickstarted production in October 2024, wrapping in March 2025. There was a brief hiatus, and then Season 3 commenced shooting in May 2025 until November 2025. The final season is currently in post-production.

How does Season 2 end? When does Avatar return to our screens? Who has been cast in Season 3? Here’s our comprehensive guide to the third and final season of Avatar: The Last Airbender

Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 Ending Explained

Shortly after defeating the Fire Nation at the Northern Water Tribe at the end of Season 1, the latest batch of episodes sees Aang (Gordon Cormier) and his team — Katara (Kiawentiio), Sokka (Ian Ousley), Appa, and Momo — head deeper into the Earth Kingdom. After Azula (Elizabeth Yu) conquered Omashu, they help guide the city’s refugees to the Earth Kingdom capital of Ba Sing Se — a stunning, impenetrable, but inherently corrupt city. Along they way, they meet young, sharp-witted earthbender Toph Beifong (Miya Cech), better known as the Blind Bandit. After seeing her mastery of earthbending, the team recruit her to pass her knowledge onto Aang. Meanwhile, Azula heads to infiltrate Ba Sing Se. And Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and Zuko (Dallas Liu) head there too, both rogue, powerless and struggling to find their identities.

Warning: The following section contains spoilers. Proceed with caution!

Season 2 ends with a major conflict in the ancient crystal catacombs underneath Ba Sing Se. Princess Azula seizes control of the city. Plus, despite an attempt at rekindling civility with Katara, when the battle commences, Zuko ultimately decides to stand by his sister. Aang battles Azula alone, but he’s not powerful enough — even when he invokes the Avatar State.  In the midst of the Avatar State, Aang briefly falters, and Azula takes advantage, striking him down with lightning. Avatar lore suggests that if the Avatar is killed while in the Avatar State, the cycle ends.

Later, Aang is carried away on Appa, where Katara uses spirit water from the Spirit Oasis at the North Pole in an attempt to bring him back to life. It appears that the water’s healing properties work, but the series cuts to credits before Aang regains full consciousness. It’s not a spoiler to say that yes, Aang does come back to life.

Who has been cast in Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3?

  • Gordon Cormier as Aang
  • Kiawentiio as Katara
  • Ian Ousley as Sokka
  • Miyako as Toph

  • Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai

What to expect in Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3 (and what are we most excited to see)?

In Season 1, Aang mastered water; in Season 2, he mastered earth; and in Season 3, Aang must find someone able to guide him in the art of bending fire.

As we covered above, Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 ends on a rather dour note: Aang is defeated whilst in the Avatar State, and is life fighting to stay alive. Meanwhile, Zuko has aligned himself with Princess Azula and together they conquer Ba Sing Se. The ending very much has a Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back feel about it — but of course, the war is far from over. Especially after the team learned that Firebenders lose their powers during a solar eclipse.

Looking ahead to Season 3, Aang and the team head to the heart of the Fire Nation, for what is the final leg of the battle and the toughest yet. It adapts Book 3: Fire. Much like the seasons before it, we expect storylines to be heavily condensed or altogether cut. The show has already done myriad reshuffling (look no further than the Painted Lady plot line, which was re-worked into the second season of Netflix’s adaptation).

What upcoming storylines and key moments are we most excited to see in Season 3? We’ve listed some of the best below:

Don’t read descriptions if you want to avoid spoilers.

  • Sokka’s Master: After realising that he’s the most vulnerable member of the team, Sokka decides to take up the art of swordsmanship. To master the blade, he seeks guidance from Piandao, one of the most celebrated swordsmen in the Four Nations.
  • The Puppetmaster: Our team happen across a mysterious innkeeper, Hama, and learn that she’s a member of the Southern Water Tribe who was taken prisoner by the Fire Nation when the war broke out. Hama teaches Katara the dark art of blood-bending.
  • The Day of the Black Sun: A two-parter in the original cartoon. Our team launch an invasion of the Fire Nation during a solar eclipse, when their powers are weakened.
  • The Firebending Masters: Aang and Zuko travel to the original source of firtbending and perform the Agni Kai; an age-old duel.
  • The Boiling Rock: Another two-parter in the original cartoon, this storyline chronicles an epic breakout of the near-impenetrable Fire Nation prison.
  • Sozin’s Comet: The epic finale to the saga.

Avatar cast and crew tease Season 3

Following the release of Season 2, some of the show’s cast and crew have teased the final season. Of course, with that cliffhanger, Gordon Cormier plays it coy on Aang’s fate: “ [He] does die or almost dies, depending on how you interpret it,” he told Netflix TUDUM.

“Our show is about hope, and the Avatar represents hope. Maybe hope gets crushed, maybe hope succeeds. That’s what makes Season 3 so exciting,” he teased.

Looking ahead to the next batch of episodes, Cormier believes Aang has learned a lot after coming so close to death. “He’ll be faced with mental challenges — remembering who he is, accepting he could have died in the Avatar State and ended the Avatar Cycle,” he added.

As for Sokka, it seems we may find him with a different mindset in Season 3. “He may struggle with the decision he made, with what it means to be a warrior, a man, and an older brother to Katara and Aang,” actor Ian Ousley said. “He might feel like he’s let Aang down, and that could be eating away at him at the beginning of Season 3.”

Of all the storylines of the show, executive producer Christine Boylan is particularly proud of Azula’s journey. “I’m excited about the storyline that she has in Season 2; I’m obsessed with the storyline she has in Season 3,” she teased.

When does Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3 release on Netflix?

Netflix has not yet announced a release date for Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3. Despite filming back-t0-back with the second season, we can say for certain that it won’t release anytime soon. The gap between the conclusion of filming on Season 2 and its release was around 15 months.

Taking everything into account, we estimate a late 2027 or early 2028 release date for Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3
