Lindsay Lohan’s reign as the queen of modern Netflix rom-coms is continuing! Following the success of her previous exclusive films for the streamer, the beloved actress is gearing up for her next major project. Titled Return to You, the new movie is officially in production—and it features a massive reunion.
Here at What’s on Netflix, we have learned that Return to You will see Lohan teaming up once again with director Mark Waters. If that name sounds familiar, it should—Waters directed Lohan in two of her most iconic, career-defining comedies: Freaky Friday (2003) and Mean Girls (2004).

What is the plot of Return to You?
Written by Eric Champnella (Alex & Me, Unstoppable), the film will feature a nostalgic, late-2000s setting and a plot that promises plenty of romance and heart.
Here is the logline for the new feature:
Set in 2008, a powerful, guarded, but lonely divorce attorney mistakenly receives a very emotional DVD from a dying woman addressed to her husband. When the late wife’s final video message is lost in the mail, she unknowingly becomes a matchmaker from beyond the grave. Guided only by the clues on the disc, the attorney sets out to reunite the tape with its rightful owner, only to fall in love with the grieving widower it was meant for.
Who is starring in Return to You?
Lindsay Lohan will be leading the cast, presumably taking on the role of the powerful but lonely divorce attorney.
Starring opposite her as the grieving widower is Henry Golding. Golding is best known for his breakout role in Crazy Rich Asians, as well as A Simple Favor, The Gentlemen, and Close Personal Friends.
We expect more cast members to be announced in the coming weeks as production ramps up.
Who is behind the production?
As mentioned, Mark Waters is taking the director’s chair, reuniting with Lohan for the first time in two decades. Waters has called Netflix home for the past few years, having directed and released La Dolce Villa and Mother of the Bride for the streamer.
The film is being produced by Brad Krevoy via his Motion Picture Corporation of America (MPCA) banner, alongside Lindsay Lohan herself. MPCA is the powerhouse production company behind nearly all of Netflix’s major holiday rom-coms, including the A Christmas Prince trilogy, The Princess Switch franchise, and Lohan’s previous Netflix hits.
Executive Producers include Olivia Krevoy, Jimmy Townsend, and Galen Fletcher.

What is the production status of Return to You?
Pre-production quietly got underway last week on September 21st, but we can confirm that principal photography officially begins today, September 28th, 2026.
Filming is scheduled to take place over the next month and a half across Toronto with some reports suggesting it’ll also head to Chicago, with the shoot currently slated to wrap on November 10th, 2026.

When will Return to You release on Netflix?
Given the production schedule, it’s too early for Netflix to announce an official release date. However, with filming wrapping up in late 2026, a release in mid-to-late 2027 is highly likely. Depending on the film’s seasonal vibes, it could easily slot into Netflix’s Fall or Holiday 2027 lineup.
