I can’t be the only person who’s tired of reboots.
No matter how desperate I am to find something new to watch, reboots are almost always my last option.
Out of all shows, I never thought I’d live to see the day Glee got a reboot.
There’s no denying that Glee is a cultural phenomenon. Even though it’s been seventeen years since the FOX series first aired, the internet still regularly references out-of-context clips and praises Glee covers.
But as beloved as the show is, I don’t know if a reboot is the right move.
Glee Was a Product of Its Time
Most people agree that a show like Glee would never get made today.
It’s not really about political correctness (though some elements, such as having an able-bodied actor playing a disabled character, did not age well).
Glee’s timely relevance has more to do with its form: a musical drama set in high school.
Some older TV shows have included musical elements, such as the famous Buffy the Vampire musical episode, but Glee was arguably the first to regularly incorporate pop song performances.
In fact, some people joke (and even seriously mean) that they prefer the Glee covers over the original songs.

This innovative approach to incorporating music into the show’s narrative is part of what makes Glee so memorable in pop culture.
While a Glee reboot would no doubt bring us some great modern pop covers (I’d love to see them cover Chappell Roan), it wouldn’t feel as revolutionary as it did in the 2000s.
And without its initial novelty, the new Glee reboot might not feel the same as watching the original series.
Even with the guaranteed nostalgia play, it’s still likely to feel hollow to some extent, no matter how good the writing is.
No matter how hard writers try, even the best can’t bring back the feeling of watching the show in the 2000s and seeing the Rocky Horror Picture Show cover episode (rest in peace, Tim Curry).
Plus, since the actors have no doubt aged out of the “passable as high schoolers or college students” age bracket, I’d be curious how they’d pull off explaining all the musical sequences.
Even if it’d be interesting to see where the characters ended up as middle-aged people, I doubt that we need a whole reboot series to answer that question. After all, that’s why fanfiction exists.
It’s better to let Glee remain an iconic series than to ruin its legacy.
Is Ryan Murphy Not Satisfied With His Empire Yet?
The Glee cast have found quite a bit of success after the show. Several cast members like Lea Michele, Darren Criss, and Matthew Morrison have recently starred in popular Broadway shows.
So, I’m curious whether they’d agree to do the reboot, which reports say Ryan Murphy recently brought up with the cast.
To that, I only have one question: hasn’t Ryan Murphy done enough?
I’m willing to concede that Murphy has contributed a lot to TV, including creating American Horror Story and Pose.
But after the hot mess that was The Shards and the ongoing, sensationalist Monster series at Netflix, I think Murphy needs a quick break.
Of course, it’s impossible to know his true intentions for the Glee reboot, but I want to know why he wants to do it now.
He has more than enough spinning plates to manage — why add one more completely unnecessary one?
I already have a hard time trusting reboots, but I could give a reboot a chance if the creators truly have good intentions or a clear vision of where they want to take it.
But with Murphy’s ever-busy roster, I would have a hard time believing that he’s dedicating the time and care needed to create a genuinely successful and honest Glee reboot.
I’m more interested in what new creators would have to say. I’d rather see a new musical series than a regurgitated Glee reboot that’s simply an echo of its past self.
I’m opposed to cheap, nostalgic cash grabs, but at the same time, the morbidly curious part of me wants to see what the Glee reboot would look like.
If it happens, we’ll get to see if lightning can really strike twice, or if William McKinley High School Glee Club’s reign is finally over.
