Netflix Sets Three New Documentaries For Release In 2024

Netflix has quietly announced that three more documentary feature films have been added to its slate of titles coming up in 2024. Below, we’ll walk you through all three: How to Rob a Bank, Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy, and Secret Lives of Orangutans.

The following documentaries weren’t included in the initial 2024 preview but have been subsequently confirmed to be in the works with more information due to be released in due course. In a similar manner, we recently told you about another four new documentaries lined up for the year, including Vampires of Gem City, Apollo 13: Survival, Mysteries of the Terracotta Warriors, and the Sir Patrick Stewart historical documentary Secrets of the Neanderthals.

How To Rob A Bank

Seth Porges, who put together the brilliant HBO Max documentary Class Action Park, is teaming with Stephen Robert Morse (Amanda Knox for Netflix, EuroTrump) for a documentary on Scott Scurlock. Given the Wiki breakdown, this documentary sounds a bit like Breaking Bad. Here’s the synopsis:

“After viewing Point Break, a charismatic Seattle party boy builds a cult-like following to construct an elaborate treehouse compound while becoming the largest meth manufacturer in the Pacific Northwest and one of the most successful bank robbers in American history.”


Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy

Nic Stacey Netflix Documentary Buy Now The Shopping Conspiracy

Director Nic Stacey will make his Netflix documentary debut with Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy. He previously worked on documentaries for HBO, National Geographic, BBC, Disney, and PBS. His best-known work is teaming up with Jeff Goldblum on the Emmy-nominated series The World According to Jeff Goldblum. Other credits include A World of Calm and One Strange Rock.

Per Netflix, here’s what you can expect from this new doc:

“Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy reveals how everyday consumer goods manufacturers and corporations from Apple to CocaCola are covertly manipulating and misleading us all to increase our consumption and waste and to prevent our recycling and reusing.”


Secret Lives of Orangutans

Serving as a spin-off of sorts to Our Planet season 1, this new documentary picks up on animals first introduced in season 1 – episode 3 titled Jungles. Huw Cordey will be returning to direct the documentary with Wild Horizons producing.

Here’s the full synopsis for the follow-up doc:

“Lisa is having a baby. At thirty two years old, it will be her third. Her second, Louis, is about to leave home.After ten years of learning from Lisa, it’s finally time for him to make his own way in life. Our Planet first introduced us to Lisa and Louis, along with Ellie and her three year old daughter Eden, back in 2018. By picking up the story of these two youngsters, and Lisa’s new arrival, this film will show the extraordinary journey eachbaby orangutan must take to become fully independent.”
