We’ll have to wait a little longer for The Witcher season 5 (the final season) to drop on Netflix, with the show now expected to be pushed back from its initial 2026 release window into 2027, What’s on Netflix has learned.
Up until recently, the fifth and final outing on the Continent was broadly expected to hit our screens sometime this year, with the show featured prominently in press materials at the top of the year as part of Netflix’s Next on Netflix campaign. However, a few eagle-eyed fans may have noticed that the upcoming season has recently been quietly scrubbed from Netflix’s public-facing promotional websites and media center for 2026. We’ve done a little digging and can confirm that the release has indeed shifted to next year, though Netflix has neither confirmed this publicly nor is thought to have locked in a specific 2027 release window just yet.
The extended wait might come as a bit of a sting, especially considering that production on the final season has actually been in the can for quite some time. As reported by our friends over at Redanian Intelligence, cameras officially stopped rolling back in September 2025, which was around a month before the penultimate season dropped on Netflix on October 30th, just in time of Halloween.
So, why the release date push? While we don’t have an official reason from the streamer, it’s not out of the question for big shows like this, announced early in the year, to be pushed back. Given the heavy reliance on VFX, big battles, and the extensive post-production work required to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s monsters and magic to life, it makes sense that the creative team is taking all the time they need to stick the landing. Plus, strategically, shifting the release gives Netflix a massive, established tentpole to help anchor their 2027 original series lineup, and don’t forget Netflix’s lineup for the end of 2026 is already looking pretty stacked with new and returning shows such as Black Doves and 3 Body Problem.
The series, which has had a rocky road on Netflix for one reason or another, still remains a show that’s picked up viewership over the years. The most recent Engagement Report suggests that viewership between 2023 and mid-2026 has reached 1.76 billion viewing hours on the streamer across its main series, various spin-offs, and supporting titles.
Season 5 will serve as the epic conclusion to the flagship series, wrapping up the intertwining destinies of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri. Liam Hemsworth will be returning to don the silver wig, wolf medallion, and dual swords for his second and final outing as the titular monster hunter.
