One Key Scene Underscores the Weirdness In My Life With The Walter Boys’ Central Triangle

- Advertisment -

If you think about it too much, the central triangle in My Life With the Walter Boys is… uncomfortable.

Jackie is often treated like the Walters’ adopted daughter, yet the series revolves around which of her two adopted brothers she wants to date.

Usually I overlook this because teen YA dramas often revolve around dubious love stories, but one scene in My Life With The Walter Boys Season 3 makes it a lot harder to ignore.

The Family Meeting Scene Made Jackie’s Dual Roles Glaringly Obvious

In Season 3 of My Life With The Walter Boys, Katherine interrupted Cole and Jackie’s private conversation to ask them to attend a family meeting.

At that meeting, the adults talked to all the kids about being careful to protect their reputations and the feelings of other family members as they choose dating partners.

The scene was hilarious, thanks to the adults’ painfully awkward attempt to disguise who they were talking about and the kids’ sarcastic responses. However, it made things very weird.

The point of this meeting was really for Katherine and George to tell their adopted daughter to be sensitive to one of her brothers’ feelings while dating the other.

Obviously, Jackie isn’t blood-related to the Walters, so there’s no issue of incest or other seriously disturbing behavior.

But it does put it on the level of when Days of Our Lives‘ Tony and Kristen dated even though they were raised as adopted brother and sister.

That kind of weirdness comes with the territory on soaps and soap-adjacent stories, but still.

It was a little bit too on-the-nose.

It’s ridiculous that Katherine’s argument will upset Alex if Jackie dates Cole, and, rather than telling her that they consider her like a daughter now, their sons are off-limits as far as dating goes.

This Scene Makes The Best Argument For Jackie and Elliot

Although Elliot was written more as a foil for Cole than as a serious love interest, he is also the only love interest Jackie has who is not part of her surrogate family.

Katherine’s speech makes it easier to accept Jackie/Elliot, at least temporarily.

Ironically, he’s associated with her overbearing Uncle Richard, so the relationship is still complicated by the pseudo-family dynamics.

It’s also arguably Richard’s control over Elliot that makes him more like a brother or cousin, but still, he isn’t established as her adopted anything, so there’s that.

Thankfully, the rest of My Life With the Walter Boys Season 3 moves away from the brothers-as-rivals motif, even if it did jump straight into new love triangles for both Cole and Alex.

Maybe this ridiculous scene was meant to remind viewers of how weird the original triangle was so they’d stop wanting it.
