American Idol’s Season 20 finale aired live on Sunday, May 22, on ABC, and Ryan told Kelly Ripa on Monday’s episode of Live with Kelly and Ryan that he had to change his underwear backstage in a high-pressure situation.

“I’m gonna let you in on something that was a little embarrassing… The show starts live and [stylist Miles Siggins] is in charge of the suits that I put on. He makes sure everything is lined up and buttoned. And you know how you go to a commercial and they go, ‘Ugh, can I tell you something?'” Ryan, 47, began.

Ryan asked what was the matter, and then he was told, “You need to change your underwear.”

“I said, ‘What do you mean I need to change my underwear?'” Ryan told his talk show co-host. “Apparently, America voted and decided that there was anatomy in the shot.”

The On Air with Ryan Seacrest host continued, “And I said, ‘Well, Miles, I didn’t bring any extra underwear. He says, ‘Don’t worry, I’ve got mine!'”

Kelly, seemingly horrified, responded with her body tense, “No, no.”

“Yes! yes,” Ryan insisted. “It was in the middle of a live show!”

“Nope,” Kelly noted, suggesting that she wouldn’t have worn someone else’s underwear.

Kelly said she would’ve demanded that producers change the camera shot to only film her from the waist up, but Ryan actually borrowed Miles’ boxer briefs.

“He’s English and so he has shorter, tighter ones,” Ryan revealed. “And so we go backstage during the commercial and find a little corner — and I’m literally taking off my pants, off my underwear, and putting his on.”

Kelly repeated in disbelief, “No, no!”

Ryan pointed out how he’s do “anything for the show” and American Idol is “a family show.”

“No, nope,” Kelly repeated. “I would say, ‘You get that camera, and you put it from [my waist] up. I’m not wearing Miles’ panties… Women do not do that.”

Ryan joked about how they weren’t “panties” but rather “tight, elastic underwear.”

“But it was a first for me during a live show,” Ryan confirmed with a laugh.

“There was just panic about it, and we changed it. Thank you, Miles. But that was a television first for yours truly.”

The show must go on! And it did.

American Idol’s three-hour finale featured performances from big stars including Flo Rida, Michael Buble and Sara Bareilles, and the episode concluded with Noah Thompson, a 20-year-old construction worker from Louisa, KY, being crowned champion.

Huntergirl, a 23-year-old singer and songwriter from Winchester, TN, finished Season 20 as the runner-up, and Leah Marlene, a 20-year-old musician from Normal, IL, placed third.

American Idol is judged by Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan.
