Sweet Magnolias Season 5 Premiere Recap – Maddie Flies Too Close to the Sun During Her New York Minute

- Advertisment -

Sweet Magnolias premiered its fifth season on Netflix on June 11, 2026, but one character was noticeably and unexpectedly missing from the season—Tyler Townsend, played by Carson Rowland

Fans are reminded that Ty left to pursue a music career and tour the world with his partner, Olivia, leaving behind his life in Serenity, which includes his girlfriend, Annie (Anneliese Judge). It was an unfortunate twist considering the duo finally confessed their feelings for each other after plenty of pining.

In the first few episodes of S5, there are a handful of mentions of Ty’s return to Serenity for Annie’s graduation, but when the day comes, he’s nowhere to be found.

Instead, both Annie and his mother, Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), receive flowers along with an apology note expressing that he couldn’t make it back in time.

While Maddie is a bit taken aback, Annie almost expected it, as did her mother, Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), as fans discover that Ty has ditched a handful of other key events, including prom and Christmas.

Let’s dig into his unexpected absence from the series—including if he’ll ever return.

What Happened to Ty on Sweet Magnolias Season 5?

The character’s character is being thrown into question on Sweet Magnolias, which doesn’t bode well for Rowland, who didn’t return for the season at all.

The reason for his departure remains unclear; however, showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson exclusively confirmed the news to Us Weekly in May, explaining that the actor decided to leave the show.

“In his leaving, we wanted to make the best of the situation and look at what happens when people leave the people they love to chase a dream,” she explained to the outlet.

While there’s something poetic about a rockstar leaving behind his small town to pursue his dreams, it’s unfortunate that it’s coming at the expense of his loved ones, including Annie, whom he recently asked to defer college and join him in his travels in Europe.

That’s truly not how you treat someone you love.

In fact, Ty’s character was thrown into question during much of the season, as Olivia returned to Serenity, revealing that the opening act tour life wasn’t for her, while revealing that Ty fell in with some musicians in Copenhagen and made it clear he wasn’t interested in coming home anytime soon.

As his brother, Kyle Townsend, begins to dig into his fear of abandonment with his therapist, it’s revealed that Ty seemingly also has a fear of being left behind, so he leaves before it can happen, which sort of explains his decision.

At one point, one of Annie’s new love interests even made a dig at Ty, indirectly, by telling her that “no man worth his salt would tell you what to do,” hinting at Ty asking Annie to defer and then leaving her behind.

The door was seemingly left open for Ty’s return, as in the final episode, Annie goes off to dance with her new love interest at Helen (Heather Headley) and Erik’s (Dion Johnstone) wedding, just as she gets a call from Ty, who previously texted that he “missed her.”

But will Rowland return?

The actor may return again in season 6, if Sweet Magnolias snags a renewal, even in a guest capacity, but nothing has been confirmed as of writing.

Meanwhile, Judge revealed she hopes fans are open to Annie’s journey even if it’s not “what they necessarily expected.” Considering she’s not hinging her happiness on a man, we fully support it.

As for the cast’s take on Rowland’s exit, Judge said the cast is supportive of his next professional steps.

"Young woman in a blue graduation gown with gold honors cords stands indoors, smiling and holding a decorated cap. She is in a cozy room with a blue piano, books, and family photos in the background."

Fans Think They Know Why Rowland Left the Series

Again, Rowland hasn’t revealed the reason behind his decision, but many have speculated that he’s set to join Prime Video’s hit drama Off Campus for season 2. So far, nothing has been confirmed, but he has been working on other projects away from Sweet Magnolias

The dad of two seemingly addressed his absence on social media, writing, “I’m alive. Promise!” seemingly hinting at another project, though it prompted a wave of fans to question why he abandoned their favorite TV ship, “Tyannie.”

“He had some other opportunities that I’m really excited for him about,” Judge shared with the outlet, seemingly revealing that he left to work on other projects. “He’s a really, really good friend of mine, and so that’s something that’s really exciting for him and for all of us. We’re all still so supportive of him.”

How Will Annie Move Forward?

Judge said the next chapter in Annie’s story allows the character to “redefine” herself outside of the chapter.

“I know Ty and Annie’s relationship has been such an important piece of Annie’s journey. That’s something that’s really meaningful and something that was really special to bring to life together,” she gushed. “And he’s such a generous scene partner. He’s so kind and just the coolest person ever. I love hanging out with him on set, off set. He’s so great, and so of course it’s sad, but it’s also really exciting.”

On Sweet Magnolias Season 5, Annie explores a no-strings-attached relationship with Blake (Austin Woods) before realizing she needs something deeper and pursues her feelings for Noah (Aidan Merwat), though the future is an open road as she’s set to embark on her college journey away from the place she’s always called home.

Sweet Magnolias‘ fifth season is currently streaming on Netflix.
