The Resident Review – Nic’s Goodbye (5×04)

Reviews

Devon survived the hour on The Resident Season 5 Episode 2, but it was touch and go there for a bit after his hydrogen sulfide poisoning.

Despite the suspense of the storyline, the possibility of Devon dying was never really on the table. He’s crucial to the team, and with Nic being killed off in the upcoming episode, Chastain can’t afford to lose anyone else.

Everyone was understandably concerned about him, however. And why wouldn’t they be? It’s Devon.

Leela was the most concerned because that’s her boo! It was her concern that led them to the search for Devon.

But honestly, why did it take everyone so long to figure out what happened? Where were the nurses that worked in casting that were feeling ill?

Does no one run or frequent that unit? There’s no way a gas leak wouldn’t have been reported sooner.

Also, why didn’t Irving recall that Devon was checking in on his patient at the end of his shift? Devon mentioned it to him before mentioning it to another nurse.

It just seems like something that never should’ve happened.

When Conrad retraced Devon’s steps, he stumbled upon Winston, who had been inhaling the poisonous gasses for most of the night.

You would think he would be far worse than Devon because of it, but surprisingly, he made a speedy recovery.

And Conrad wasn’t even phased by the gasses, unlike Devon who quite literally passed out.

The scene made me do a double-take, and while they eventually explained that Devon turned on the vent in the room, it still didn’t feel all that believable.

Almost losing Devon convinced Leela that she wanted to move in with him, and I’m just waiting for my invite to the housewarming.

A normal and healthy relationship looks good on Devon.

Billie’s son, Trevor, made his debut when he brought his girlfriend Janey to the ER during an overdose.

Was anyone else shocked at how the staff referred to junkies? Addicts are people too. They’ve made mistakes, but they don’t deserve to be looked down on/talked down to.

It wasn’t even Irving, who basically dismissed Janey because of her addiction, but even Billie contributed to the ugliness.

It was uncalled for, especially from people who are supposed to be medical professionals that never let any personal emotions cloud their judgment.

When Trevor confronted Billie about playing God, at least the Raptor had an actual reason for possibly refusing Janey the valve replacement surgery other than “she’s a junkie.”

Every Billie and Trevor scene made me cringe. The series didn’t do him any favors by painting him as a stalker last season, but it’s also not doing Billie any favors by having her accuse him of continuing to stalk her.

They were both out of line with their behavior — she told him to respect her privacy after accusing him of stalking her, while he kept taking digs at her at every turn.

I get it, there’s a lot of hurts there, but maybe take that conversation to a different setting?

Billie doesn’t owe Trevor anything, but she doesn’t have to be ice cold to him either. Seeing him brings up painful memories of a terrible situation in her life, but since none of that is his fault, so he doesn’t deserve to be treated like a nuisance.

However, Trevor’s feeling of abandonment is warranted. He doesn’t know the situation behind his mother’s choice, so he just thinks she turned her back on him for no good reason.

By keeping everything close to heart, Billie isn’t just hurting herself, she’s also hurting Trevor.

This is all part of a much larger conversation that can happen outside of the ER if both parties are willing.

AJ is perceptive, so he picked up on the tension between them. And it didn’t take long for him to learn the truth as Trevor and Billie bickered like a mom and son would.

Billie even overstepped by trying to judge his life and acting as though she was allowed to have any input.

When Trevor finally confided in AJ, it was a breakthrough moment for the two of them.

Personally, I don’t care to see Billie and Trevor work things out as much as I’m digging the relationship forming between AJ and Trevor.

AJ sees himself in Trevor as he understands the hurt of being given up and adopted. He gave him some great unsolicited advice, which proves he wants to be a mentor to Trevor and help him navigate these emotions.

AJ also understands where Billie is coming from and wants to respect her wishes.

It was great seeing him and Billie working together — their dynamic isn’t anywhere near what AJ and Mina had, but it’s still fun to watch.

After a day of saving Devon, Conrad retreated home to spend time with his girls.

But when Nic wasn’t responding, he should’ve known something was up.

I was holding my breath when he got the knock on his door and went to open it thinking the love of his life was back from her spa weekend.

Instead, he was met with cops, who informed him that there had been an accident.

Considering Emily Van Camp is being written off the show, you know that we’re about to set foot on a deeply emotional episode that changes Conrad and Gigi’s life forever.

I’m already getting my tissues ready because just the teaser left me balling.

On a brighter note, things between Bell and Kit are heating up.

Bell saved the day by doing his due diligence and finding out the truth about Brower, a potential hire. After a ransomware attack and a poisonous gas situation, the last thing Kit needs is an HR nightmare at Chastain.

Bell also felt like he overstepped when he asked her to dinner, but Kit was totally digging the idea.

She’s more than ready to get out of the friend zone. Though, you have to admit that it’s sweet that Bell decided to apologize for potentially making things awkward. Sure, it likely stemmed from a slightly bruised ego, but it just goes to show how much progress Bell has made over the course of four seasons.

If there’s anything The Resident excels at, it’s pulling together relationships we can stan.

What did you think of the episode? Are you intrigued by the Billie and Trevor storyline? Or are you more impressed with AJ’s wisdom?

Will Leela and Devon tie the knot soon?

Comment below, and prepare for an emotional episode come next week!
