One of the overarching plots of High Potential has been the mystery of Roman Sinquerra’s disappearance.
Roman Sinquerra is the ex‑boyfriend of Morgan Gillory (played by Kaitlin Olson) and the father of her daughter, Ava (Amirah J).
At the start of the series, he’s missing, vanishing 15 years earlier, after going out to buy diapers when the now-teen was just a baby and never returning, leading to many questions for Morgan, who had to raise Ava all on her own.
Fast-forward over a decade later, and one of the requests before Morgan accepted the job as a consultant with the LAPD, was that Lt. Selena Soto would try to get her the answers she’s been longing for about Roman.
Soto agreed and started pulling at a very complex string.
So far, High Potential hasn’t fully solved the Roman mystery, but several key developments have unfolded:
In the Season 1 finale, it was revealed that Roman is still alive and he’s not just someone who “left his family,” confirming what Morgan always believed—there’s more to the story.
Government and FBI connections also surfaced, as he was revealed to have been an undercover FBI informant of some kind, which could explain why his disappearance was shrouded in secrecy.
In season 2, there’s a little more momentum (though not as much as some fans would like), as a man using Roman’s name appears. Arthur Ellis (played by Mekhi Phifer) tells Morgan that Roman contacted him and suggests Roman has been around all this time, watching his daughter from afar.
High Potential Roman Sinquerra Mystery
In a backpack Roman left with Arthur, Morgan finds his items, including a drawing of young Ava. It’s said Roman doesn’t trust the police or the LAPD, so it doesn’t help that Morgan has ingrained herself with them, underscoring a corruption storyline that he got involved in.
There are theories out there that he informed on the wrong people or is in Witness Protection, or he witnessed a crime and had to go on the run.
There’s proof of that corruption when Soto links Roman to Willa Quinn, a high-profile fixer, who is adamant that she has no involvement with the Sinquerra mystery; however, her rendezvous with Captain Nick Wagner’s father suggests otherwise.
While there’s no clear connection between Willa, Wagner and Roman, there’s a reason that Willa had Arthur moved somewhere where Soto can no longer get information out of him (he obviously knows way more than he’s letting on), and why she wanted Wagner to pull Morgan from Major Crimes to work on his campaign.
When Wagner Sr. tries to cut ties with her, Quinn reminds him that she has the upper hand as she knows where all the bodies are buried. Namely, if she goes down, so does he.
Clearly, they are involved in whatever went down with Roman, which Morgan is already very much aware of.
In the upcoming teaser for the High Potential Season 2 finale, Episode 18, Morgan confronts Willa, stating, “Tell me what happened to Roman.”
Willa retorts, “You are inches away from putting Chloe and Elliot in danger,” seemingly threatening her other two children, which Morgan does not respond to very well.
As she crashes her car into Willa’s, she underscores, “You don’t say my kids’ names,” as Willa screams, “I’m trying to warn you.”
It’s clear that Morgan is closer to the truth than ever before, and she won’t stop pressing the gas on it… but is that putting her in danger?
It’s possible Roman made a deal before going off-the-grid that protects Ava; however, Morgan’s other two children are left exposed. Or maybe he left solely to protect his family?
Warn Morgan about what? Is Roman the one who’s dangerous? Is someone else pulling the strings, and Willa is simply acting on their behalf?
As fans get impatient about the Roman storyline, expressing that it’s been dragged out for two seasons, let’s hope we get some real answers when the finale airs on April 7!
