As soon as Grey’s Anatomy announced that it was cutting Teddy and Owen after Season 22, there were cheers.
Many people commented on how it was about time, and as much as I don’t like people losing their jobs, when it comes to Teddy and Owen, there are major issues.
There is a lot of screen time focused on them for the wrong reasons, but getting rid of them won’t solve the biggest issue of all.
Grey’s Anatomy Has Too Many Problematic Couples
One reason people are happy to see Teddy and Owen leave Grey’s Anatomy is that they are problematic.
Owen has been one of the most toxic men on the series for years.
It’s a shame because when he first joined, he was interesting. There was an eagerness to learn the ways of a hospital after spending time as a military doctor.
After the plane crash at the end of Grey’s Anatomy Season 8, things changed, and he became too focused on relationships and children rather than medicine.
Teddy was also a likable character at first, starting with a potential love triangle during Grey’s Anatomy Season 6 and then getting to the point where she was willing to play the system to help a patient get the medical treatment he needed.
It was after Henry that things took a turn for the worse, and there was a sense of relief when she left.
Coming back didn’t help matters, sadly, even though she could have had some interesting arcs in her rise up the career ladder.
Instead, there was too much focus on her relationships with Owen and then Koracick.
Yet, they’re not the only problematic couple, with Link and Jo close behind them.
The two have had a lot of time focused on their home life, and while that’s understandable given the new twins and Jo’s heart issues, the focus hasn’t been positive.
Link is selfish, and more often than not, he doesn’t see just how much he needs to grow, while Jo often lets things get to a boiling point before talking about her feelings.
Then there’s Amelia, as she jumps into relationship after relationship. It’s hard to keep track of who she’s actually into and whether she even remembers how to be a surgeon at times.
While she was on sabbatical, she was supposed to work on herself, and instead, it seems like she’s 100 times worse.
Simone is another troublesome character, as she clearly doesn’t know what she wants in love or life.
She jumps into bed with another man after Lucas breaks up with her, and then decides to try to hide that from him rather than just being honest about it.
When Lucas is angry at her for her actions, she takes it out on everyone else.
Yet, she could have some intriguing storylines, especially when it comes to learning a little more about her mom, since her dad won’t reopen that wound, yet the show has created a character it’s hard to care about.
It’s almost like every single storyline for most characters revolves around their relationships, and this is where Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 needs to change.
It’s Time to Put the Focus Back on the Patients
Cast your mind back to the earlier days of Grey’s Anatomy. What made the series so strong?
Yes, there were interpersonal relationships at the hospital.
While we did have a few relationship storylines, such as Meredith and Derek and Cristina and Burke hooking up, we also had a lot of friendship storylines develop.
We got a sense of a real best friend relationship forming between Meredith and Cristina, and eventually between other characters like Izzy and Karev.
There were even real friendships or mentorships forming between the residents and attendings, such as with Derek and Mark, Webber and Bailey, and Callie and Mark.
Most importantly, though, we got the medicine. This was a show about baby doctors learning how to be adults.
They took risks, they made mistakes, and sometimes they broke the rules. They would learn from the consequences, becoming stronger and more accomplished surgeons.
As they moved up the ranks at the hospital, it was easier to believe it.
Can we really imagine Jules, Blue, Simone, or Lucas doing any solo operations right now? Jules just about managed it with Beltran teaching her, but Jules couldn’t have done it completely on her own!
There was a focus on medical inventions or on heartbreaking cases that allowed us to get to know the patients.
The drama and emotion were woven into the medical cases and hospital relationships, creating a more balanced and exciting series.
That’s what Grey’s Anatomy is missing now, and the last few episodes have proven that as focus returns to it.
Losing Owen and Teddy is going to help get rid of one toxic couple, but it’s not going to solve the biggest problem the series has, and the writers have to be willing to admit that that’s where they are failing.
