9-1-1 has always existed as something more than just a standard procedural.
Yes, there’s a formula, and most hours adhere to that, a common mixture of emergencies and personal storylines that drive the entire series forward.
But since the beginning, there have been hours that break the “norm”, highlighting the characters and delivering powerful storytelling that allows these characters to exist outside of their roles within the fabric of their profession.
The most recent episode to deviate from the standard was the well-received 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 13, which saw Buck and Eddie’s road trip devolve into a terrifying ordeal.
The hour was a showcase for fan-favorites Buck and Eddie, whose dynamic has long been one of the show’s most popular, and it places them into a storyline that we’re already seeing have ramifications as the season continues.
Outside of the Buck and Eddie of it all, which has always been a layered, deeply rich dynamic that audiences will always flock to, it was also a stepping stone for Buck to confront his feelings about Bobby’s death.
All roads within that hour led to Buck’s confession, something that will surely have a profound impact on his continued journey.
9-1-1 has always delivered these hours, whether that be ‘Begins’ episodes that tap into the origins of the characters, detailing the very paths they took to get to the current places we’re seeing them today.
And outside of those signature hours, there have been many others throughout the series that have taken the approach of signaling out a character and making their journey the central piece.
Take, for instance, 9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 13, which focused on Maddie trying to escape her abusive and deadly ex-husband Doug, who’d kidnapped her.
This powerful hour was devoid of the typical emergencies, and while many other characters were present, Maddie’s ordeal was the focus, allowing this part of Maddie’s journey to hit a crescendo as the season built toward this desperate moment.
And since then, many other episodes have followed suit, like 9-1-1 Season 6 Episode 3, which saw Bobby and Athena travel to Florida after her father suffered a stroke.
The hour is punctuated by the two jumping into a decades-long mystery that helped shape so much of Athena’s life. It was yet again this defining moment for Athena, and the payoff of a story that had been lingering for seasons.
This notion that hours like those, the ones that rely heavily on the characters and not the action pieces, aren’t indicative of 9-1-1 feels not only patently false but like a fundamental mistake about what has always made 9-1-1 so successful.
Those big opening emergencies may draw people in, but those who have been here for 9 seasons or have joined along the way have been drawn to the series’ emotional grounding.
It’s the relationships, the quiet moments between beloved characters, the workplace dynamics, that define the entirety of the series.
Without those, 9-1-1 is another run-of-the-mill procedural failing to stand out in an era where they come a dime a dozen.
9-1-1 has always stood apart because of its desire not only to deliver wacky, bizarre action but also to create an environment where these characters feel like family.
You see the ups and downs both on the job and outside of it, and that balance is exactly why the show has prospered and continues to do so as it approaches its tenth season next fall.
Emergencies are a major part of everything, but Buck and Eddie’s New Mexico horror movie is more than just a break from the status quo; it is truly the kind of connective tissue that has always brought the entire show together.
9-1-1 should never stop incorporating these hours, and they never will, because they know it’s an important part of both their identity and their success.
To reduce 9-1-1 to just a series about emergencies is to miss what has always made it special.
We don’t need a thriller hour every single week, but they are as paramount to the very foundation the series was built upon as every single rescue.
The show has never been solely about the spectacle, but about the people at its center and the lives they carry on long after the sirens fade into the distance.
