Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 14 Offered an Incredibly Relatable Missy Story

- Advertisment -

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is always better when the Coopers are part of the story.

While it’s important for the series to stand on its own, it’s also vital it not forget its roots, and episodes that feel like an extension of Young Sheldon always work well.

As a bonus, the Missy story on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 14 was incredibly relatable without losing sight of the fact that this show is supposed to be a comedy.

Missy’s Dilemma Hurts More Knowing Where She Ends Up

Sometimes, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is more painful because it’s a prequel — we know things we’re not supposed to.

That was what made the family’s argument about whether Sheldon would ever have a wife and family one of the best moments of the episode. We know that Mary’s prediction comes true, and her fierce insistence on it was a good callback (or call forward?) to the Young Sheldon series finale.

Similarly, Mary’s fears about Missy were painful because they were so close to the truth.

The adult Missy was unhappy to be pregnant again, and if I recall correctly, her relationship with the father was falling apart at the time.

That gives teeth not only to Mary’s frustration with her daughter’s behavior, but to her question about where she went so wrong that two out of her three kids began having sex in high school.

I could empathize with her even though she was driving me up the wall because Mandy and Georgie were right that Mary was only making everything worse.

Part of Missy’s problem, of course, is that she was never able to resolve her grief after her father’s sudden death — she was a Daddy’s girl who felt more accepted by him than by any other adult in the family.

And she really can’t talk to Mary, because Mary is too judgmental, and Mary’s pain very clearly comes in part from feeling like she cannot connect with her daughter.

That’s why Mandy was right to step in as a non-judgmental adult who can at least help Missy try to avoid pregnancy and STDs.

I’m Not Sure Whether Missy Is Really Georgie’s Responsibility

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 14 kept repeating that Missy is Georgie’s responsibility since his father died, and Mandy added that the girl is also her responsibility, but I’m not convinced of that.

It makes sense that Georgie would want to step in and help take care of his little sister, but it felt like he was expected to be partly her surrogate parent rather than her older brother, and I don’t like that dynamic.

Georgie has his own life, and he needs to focus on his wife and daughter. Sure, he can be an influence on Missy and try to help, but making him responsible for her felt like a bridge too far.

Additionally, Georgie is not the best person to go to with the issue of Missy wanting to have sex with her high school boyfriend, considering how he ended up married to Mandy in the first place.

(Troy Harvey/CBS)

His perspective will be skewed by his mixed feelings about his own situation. He loves his family, yet knows that the path he took was harder than it needed to be.

Plus, why would Missy listen to any advice from him about abstention or even being careful? To her sixteen-year-old ears, it would sound like utter hypocrisy coming from the man who became a father when he was only a year older than she is now.

How do you think the Missy situation should have been handled?

Pastor Jeff’s Inclusion Demonstrated How Few Support Resources The Coopers Have

Pastor Jeff was absolutely the wrong person to handle family counseling during this situation, but who else could the Coopers turn to?

Therapy wasn’t common for kids who weren’t in serious psychological trouble in the 1990s, and Mary would probably have viewed the idea of taking Missy to a therapist as a stain on her reputation as a mother.

The limited support Georgie was getting from Rueben and Jim wasn’t helpful, especially Rueben’s ridiculous comments, and there are few people Mary would trust as much as she does Pastor Jeff.

He had to be the one to take this on despite his bad blood with Mandy, his religious bent that would alienate Missy, and his clear agreement with Mary’s side of the conflict.

As a result, very little was accomplished other than everyone yelling at each other, though I suppose there was some value in each person involved in the conflict getting their feelings out.

I’m curious as to where this will go. Obviously, this story isn’t over since everyone’s still angry at each other, Missy is still determined to keep having sex, Mary disapproves, and Georgie is only giving lip service to being on Mandy’s side because he thinks he’s supposed to.

I was glad that Georgie and Mandy did eventually work out their conflict, but we know that won’t last, and I can’t help wondering how much this Missy issue and Georgie’s feeling that he has to choose between his wife and his mother will impact the eventual end of the marriage.
