Only One House of the Dragon Character Is Worthy of the Iron Throne

- Advertisment -

When it comes to the fight for the Iron Throne on House of the Dragon, people are either Team Green or Team Black.

At the heart of it, they either want Aegon on the Iron Throne or they believe that Rhaenyra is the rightful heir.

Sure, there are some thoughts about Aemond, Daemon, and Daeron to a lesser degree, but it’s mostly about the two half-siblings, who continue to fight against each other.

Everyone is overlooking the one character worthy of the Iron Throne, the character even Ryan Condal believes should be the one to rule Westeros, and that’s because it simply can’t happen.

Alicent Should Rule Westeros

Condal shared that he would have liked to see Alicent sit on the Iron Throne, and the House of the Dragon character has done that in all but name.

As we got the time jumps throughout House of the Dragon Season 1, we saw Alicent stand in for Viserys at the small council meetings.

She was a loud and clear voice, although ruling for her husband started to take its toll.

She suffered under the weight of the decisions that she had to make, and in a moment of honesty with Rhaenyra during House of the Dragon Season 3, she noted that.

Sure, the Dance of the Dragons started because of Alicent’s mistakes and drive.

Believing that Viserys had changed his mind, she fought to put her son, Aegon, on the Iron Throne.

It took her some time to realize her mistake, and by then it was too late to change the outcome. The battle between the two branches of the family had started, and there was no turning back.

That doesn’t change the fact that she has experience in ruling and knows what it takes to make decisions, such as keeping the smallfolk fed and happy.

As her son made some terrible, selfish decisions, she tried to counsel him in a different direction.

She tried to persuade him to show compassion, but to no avail, and she was ultimately forced out of the small council.

It was a grave mistake. This decision led to more of the smallfolk turning against Aegon and Team Green.

While she has her flaws, such as bullying Rhaenyra’s children, she still put the smallfolk first and thought of Westeros as a whole.

She wanted to do right by the people, even if it wasn’t always possible.

When she spoke with a confined Rhaenys at the end of the first season, she made it clear that she wanted minimal bloodshed to protect the smallfolk.

During House of the Dragon Season 2, she shares her concerns for the smallfolk as the blockade leads to food shortages.

While Rhaenyra’s blockade causes the food shortages, Aegon’s unwillingness to act in the best interest of the smallfolk is something that turns the people against him.

She has even learned from her mistakes and is trying to share ideas with Rhaenyra to help end the civil war.

Yes, her actions led to the Dance of the Dragons, but as she realized her mistakes, she tried to get Rhaenyra on the Iron Throne, tried to keep the more innocent of her children protected, and realized that her own jealousy and anger had led to all this.

People can change, and it’s that change and acceptance that makes her a better person to rule the country than anyone else.

Alicent Can’t Sit on the Iron Throne

In the end, though, we know that Alicent can’t be Queen of Westeros.

Sure, she ruled in all but name, but nobody except those who were within the castle walls knows that.

The people definitely don’t know that Viserys didn’t make many decisions at the end.

All they see is the Queen Mother, and they’re not going to accept her as queen.

Not only is she a Hightower rather than a Targaryen, but she’s also a woman. People in the Game of Thrones prequel series don’t believe women can rule.

That’s one reason most people immediately accepted Aegon rather than Rhaenyra in the first place.

We also know that a Targaryen will end up sitting on the Iron Throne once the Dance of the Dragons comes to an end.

How that plays out on the series is anybody’s guess considering the changes, but it’s all about Aegon III, Rhaenyra’s elder son with Daemon.

After the deaths of Rhaenyra and Aegon II, it’s Aegon III who sits on the Iron Throne, and eventually, it brings peace.

At least, that is, until Robert Baratheon starts his war, usurping the throne from the Mad King, which kicks off Game of Thrones.

So, while Alicent would make a great queen, it simply isn’t going to happen, so it’s just a wish.

Who would you put on the Iron Throne?
This is where we love to hear from you. Do you agree with the idea of Alicent, or is there someone else in Westeros who would be a better ruler? It’s your turn to sound off in the comments below.
