Days of Our Lives has finally given Sarah a meaty story, but I’m worried.
Xander helping her when Destiny fainted in the Square, and again supporting her now that her patient has passed away, makes it clear where this story is going.
And yes, now we have a medical mystery (sort of), but it all still seems too much like Destiny and her sister were plot points whose sole purpose was to activate Sarah’s feelings for Xander.

Sarah’s Examination of Destiny On Days of Our Lives Shouldn’t Have Been So Rushed
After Destiny’s death, Sarah felt guilty about not having forced her to stay and receive additional treatment, but this fell slightly flat because of the way the scene was staged.
For one thing, it was incredibly obvious that Destiny had some sort of drug problem.
She came into the clinic with symptoms that resembled withdrawal from opioids, asked for painkillers, claimed she took something that she “found in the back of the cabinet,” and exploded when Sarah wouldn’t simply give her more pain meds.
For this reason alone, Sarah’s guilt is more earned than the storyline seems to intend it to be.

She didn’t do a tox screen or check whether Destiny’s name was on the list of patients who were flagged for possible drug-seeking behavior in the past.
She also didn’t start her on IV fluids despite diagnosing Destiny with dehydration, which also didn’t make any sense and makes it look like Sarah didn’t do her due diligence, even if it is true that she couldn’t force Destiny to stay.
I’m not saying that Days of Our Lives couldn’t do a strong story about Sarah facing the fact that she did exactly what this patient feared and gave her substandard care because she was a low-income patient at a free clinic who likely had a drug problem.
In fact, that could be a great story if done well.
Kayla calling Sarah in front of a meeting of the hospital board to defend her actions, a possible suspension, a family threatening a malpractice lawsuit, and all of the above happening while Sarah struggles to find the will to fight for her career because she knows her screw-up cost someone her life.

But it doesn’t seem like this is how any of this will play out.
Instead, aside from a brief conversation with JJ about how Destiny had hidden her self-destructive habits so well, Sarah’s sole support has come from Xander.
Xander helped tend to Destiny until the ambulance arrived, waited at the hospital for news, grieved with Sarah afterward, took her home, comforted her some more, and then later advised her not to stay up all night investigating the link between Destiny and Liam.
In case all of that didn’t make it glaringly obvious that Destiny’s death is mostly a plot point to get Sarah and Xander back together (with the bonus subplot of Sarah needing to talk to Liam, which foils Gabi’s plan to get Liam away from Ari).
Sarah dreamed that Brady caught her in bed with Xander and both men pressured her to make a choice.

This Medical Mystery Should Be a Story In Its Own Right
I would prefer that Sarah and Xander not get back together, but even if they were my favorite couple, I’d still be annoyed by this method of getting them to reconcile.
It’s manipulative, lazy writing. Instead of Destiny being a person in her own right, her illness and death are little more than a reason for Sarah to think twice about her decision to cut Xander out of her life.
It’s doubly annoying because while Sarah was dreaming about Xander, Xander was in the Square, blackmailing Gabi — the exact type of behavior that causes Sarah to break up with Xander over and over.
If Sarah and Xander are going to get back together, it shouldn’t be for only a few months until the next time Sarah explodes because Xander did something shady.

Plus, it goes without saying that a serious issue like someone whose death is likely connected to drug abuse shouldn’t be a mere plot point.
Sarah’s focus now seems to be on why both Destiny and her sister died from a drug overdose. I’m not sure why this mystery is capturing her attention, other than it’s a convenient distraction from her pain and guilt over Destiny’s death.
This mystery also brings her closer to Brady, who is a PI in training and can help her — which will make her inevitable decision to return to Xander even more painful.
If this were in balance with a genuine medical mystery or a real story about Sarah’s failure in this case, that would be fine.
It would also be interesting if Sarah wanted to understand what factors led both Destiny and Clea to use drugs and end up dead, rather than acting like the fact that two people from the same family having the same medical issue was a huge mystery.

But instead, Xander and Sarah are the entire story, and that’s completely ridiculous in addition to being a missed opportunity for fantastic drama for Sarah.
Of course, I could be wrong — Days of Our Lives could surprise me this time and give us a real medical mystery or an emotional story about Sarah’s guilt and her realization that vulnerable patients sometimes slip through the cracks.
But it doesn’t seem that way, and that’s frustrating on every level. Sarah deserves a story that is actually about her work, her choices, and her conscience, not another obstacle to romantic happiness.
Or at least, that’s how I see it.
