Sullivan’s Crossing has been one of my favorite shows since it touched down on The CW in 2023.
It was between seasons of Virgin River, and I was scouring for my next obsession.
Sullivan’s Crossing fit the bill, especially with several familiar faces from The CW’s past, including Scott Patterson (Gilmore Girls) and Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill), while Morgan Kohan proved to be a fantastic lead as Maggie Sullivan.
While the series has delved deeply into Maggie’s romantic life, arguably the show’s best relationship has been Maggie’s complicated, ever-evolving bond with her father, Sully.
At the end of Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3, Sully’s trip to Ireland seemed like it would be over by the time Season 4 got underway.
Fast forward to this month, when news broke that the exit wasn’t temporary and that show creatives framed it as something that could change down the line.
It was a sucker punch and one that pushed the series into the unknown. What surprised me most was how quickly Scott set the record straight.
His statement about having major creative differences with the show’s direction came from the heart.
He wanted to share his take on the situation and also call out those were trying to frame his departure as his own call.
Sullivan’s Crossing Has Been Dealt a Huge Blow
The only silver lining here is that it seems Scott got out before it got too toxic. He was evidently unhappy with the show’s direction.
His comments suggest the issues with Sullivan’s Crossing‘s creative direction run deep, and likely have for quite some time.
For that reason alone, and the public nature of his departure, it’s hard to imagine a reality in which he will come back.
It’s a real tragedy for him and for everyone who tunes in to watch. Losing a beloved character is never easy for a fan-favorite series.
It’s untapped potential, leaving everyone wondering what might have been.
I don’t think there’s a logical way to explain Sully’s departure, so my best guess is that he’ll be staying put in Ireland until the show manages to craft a believable arc.
The issue plaguing Sullivan’s Crossing Season 4 — and potentially beyond — is that Sully is very much the glue that holds much of the show together.
Whenever something happens in town, he’s involved somehow, because people trust him. Unless the series plans on introducing another character to take on that mantle, it will feel hollow.
Shoehorning a Replacement Into Season 4 Probably Won’t Work
I can’t even imagine how they would bring in a replacement without it being too obvious.
On top of that, how are viewers supposed to get on board with a new face when Sully has essentially been written out without so much as an afterthought?
The biggest challenge for the series moving forward will be Maggie herself.
So much of her emotional journey has been tied to repairing her relationship with Sully.
Removing him from the equation risks cutting off one of the show’s most compelling story engines.
You’d think, with the show’s blow-up on Netflix, more effort would have been put into keeping the cast intact and taking their wants for their characters on board.
It will be an interesting few months seeing how it all pans out, but for now, I’m not too keen on where things are headed.
