St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 15 Forces Bruce To Make A Difficult Choice

- Advertisment -

Out of all the characters on St. Denis Medical, Bruce had the hardest dilemma this week by far.

It’s no surprise that the hospital is severely underfunded, as much of Season 1 focused on securing a larger budget.

So when Bruce gets a job offer with a sizable pay raise at a fancy place, it’s no wonder he seriously considers leaving.

While the surgeon weighs his options, Matt helps Ron reset his password, and baby fever sweeps the hospital, targeting none other than Serena herself.

St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 15 keeps it simple yet still speaks to audiences from the heart.

Brighter Pastures… Or Are They?

In the midst of all the birthing center work, Joyce has had a lot to juggle on her plate.

This episode introduces a new character, Camille (Suzy Nakamura), who is an administrator at the rival Portland General Hospital.

Joyce’s desperate attempt to prove that St. Denis Medical is as incredible as Portland General is nothing short of hilarious.

It’s obvious that Joyce is operating from both a fierce protectiveness of her workplace and an opposition to Portland General.

The storyline shifts to focus on Bruce and his potential offer at Camille’s hospital, which he takes into serious consideration.

After the last episode, it’s hard to believe that he would ever consider leaving St. Denis after his bond with Matt.

Especially with the way Matt was hugging Bruce after the surgeon announced his departure, there’s a genuine sadness to Bruce’s potential exit.

But at Portland General, Bruce also slowly realizes he may not belong, as if his off-putting jokes don’t land well with his new coworkers.

Even the setting of Portland General itself, which is much more sterilized and modern with stark white walls, makes it clear that this workplace is far from comfortable.

As someone who was initially hesitant about Bruce’s arc this season, I’m surprisingly delighted by the direction that his storyline is going in.

For a lot of sitcoms, it can be difficult to walk the line between an insufferable, stuck-up coworker and a misunderstood one.

St. Denis Medical is finding the perfect balance by giving audiences a look into Bruce’s emotional world and by understanding and empathizing with him.

(Greg Gayne/NBC)

He may try to portray himself as a stone-cold leader, but Bruce ultimately has an undeniable soft spot for the people he cares about.

While Bruce’s ultimate decision is predictable in the sitcom’s world, his journey to reach it is heartwarming.

Sick With Baby Fever

As someone who isn’t as susceptible to baby fever as some of my friends, I found Serena’s initial resistance to the new baby very relatable.

The exaggerated fawning over the baby might be played up for comedic effect, but it’s also a hysterical reflection of reality.

(Greg Gayne/NBC)

Ever the observant, Serena quickly discovers that she can offer to take care of the baby for personal gain.

And even though she might claim that she doesn’t care, Serena does clearly care a bit about the baby.

But of course, as a mother herself, Alex can tell when the fun stops and the stress of caring for another human being begins for Serena.

The universal lesson of the storyline is that some things that may look easy might actually require more commitment than expected.

(Greg Gayne/NBC)

While that theme sometimes struggles to shine through, this plotline ultimately functioned as a fun look into how Serena navigates conflicts.

Plus, it’s been a while since we’ve had an Alex and Serena plotline, so it was wonderful to see a spotlight on their friendship again.

What Was Your Mother’s Maiden Name?

The most outlandish bit of this week’s episode was Ron and Matt teaming up to figure out Ron’s password.

I actually quite enjoy how these two characters’ personalities complement each other.

For a task as tedious as navigating security questions and computer updates, it makes sense that Matt would be the person with enough patience to deal with Ron’s frustrations.

(Greg Gayne/NBC)

To its credit, the obstacles take unexpected turns, such as Ron having to call his ex-wife.

But this segment relied on Ron’s unwillingness to admit he’s struggling and on Matt’s eagerness to help.

The baby and password plotlines may be silly at first glance, but they actually work quite well to offset the slightly more serious emotional undertone of Bruce’s storyline.

I’m excited to see more of Bruce’s personal growth in future episodes and get further updates on the birthing center next week!
