Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 8 Review: Confessions, Cardigans, and Crushing Injuries

I’ve been waiting patiently all season for the Lady Greyhounds to get on the pitch and win us some matches. Finally, we’re kicking an episode off with some actual football!

Now, I’m not complaining that this season has skewed more toward intimate character study than a fast-paced sports drama. 

But football is the reason we’re all here, isn’t it? 

Ted Lasso Season 4 has had a surprising dearth of real match time, and it was rewarding to finally get to see the team — and the talented crew of actors behind it — crush it on the pitch. 

It was also rewarding to see the foreshadowing in Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 2 — which hinted at the destructive force of team injuries — come full circle this week.

After that necessary groundwork, we finally get a nuanced look at the many emotional facets of such a knee injury and how it can affect the player, their team, their coaches, and their loved ones in myriad ways. 

However, Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 8 reverts to the classic Ted Lasso formula: it rapidly builds the team’s success, only to throw an overwhelming setback into the mix.

As soon as the team climbs too high, they have to get knocked down a peg. 

And while I understand that is the conceit — the show is all about overcoming adversity, after all — the impact of this week’s conflict suffered from the lack of game time we’ve seen this season. 

The buildup to Gemma’s injury relied on the opening montage to do all the legwork to demonstrate that the team had climbed to the top of the league — and therefore, had further to fall. 

But since we missed out on witnessing the buildup of their performance as a team, it also means we missed out on fully buying into the stakes of their success.

The season should have spent more time making it explicit that a D1 promotion was reasonably on the line.

Now, I have to give more love to the show’s immaculate costume designer, Jack Levy. I’ve maintained that the New Year’s outfits were a season highlight for the wardrobe, but Keeley’s costumes were really something else this week. 

I loved seeing the Kansas City hat from Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 1 make a reappearance. But the thigh-high socks with those sky high pumps? What a choice.

Now Rebecca? In that black cardigan? I was speechless. 

What I’ve realized by covering Ted Lasso Season 4 is that I’ve become Rebecca’s number one fangirl.

I’ve tried to be more impartial while writing these reviews; otherwise, my complete and utter adoration for her will take the wheel, and I’ll talk about nothing else. 

Has anyone ever looked more incredible? No. Is there anything Rebecca Welton can’t do? A rhetorical question, of course, because she just gets more and more iconic each episode. 

Ted was also back this week with another inspirational locker room address. The “Let it Out” speech may have leaned a bit too trite and cliché — it won’t go down as his strongest — but it did provide some nice material to show Alice’s emotional range. 

Tanya Reynolds brought her A-game this week with quite the emotionally complex performance.

Both her crying scene with Ted and her discussion with Rebecca were among the installment’s strongest moments — and two great scenes where the show relied on subtle, layered acting to hint at the deeper story beneath the surface. 

The complexity of Alice’s emotions is on full display: the guilt at putting Gemma in the position that resulted in her injury, the anxiety triggered by her own experience, the worry she has for Gemma as an individual, and the responsibility she has to the team to help them through this setback.

And although I initially predicted this season would focus more on the dynamic between Alice and Rebecca, it was still immensely satisfying to watch a scene that cemented their evolution into two strong, dedicated leaders.

However, every episode leaves me hungrier to better understand the dynamic between Gemma and Alice. I just can’t get over their chemistry. 

By skirting around their past, it feels like we’re left with small tastes of their story instead of the full meal.

There’s clearly a backstory between them that hasn’t been revealed yet. We aren’t blind! They are far too emotionally invested in each other for there not to be. 

The suspense about their dysfunctional dynamic has been building and building, and it’s past time we’re rewarded with more depth. 

The mystery behind why things are that loaded between them has been compellingly teased by both actors. But with two episodes remaining, I fear we may not get enough insight to fully explain the strength of their push and pull. 

This episode also reminded us just how powerful Roy and Keeley’s chemistry is when they banter — and how much of a treat it is to spend extended time with these two characters.

If I could sign up to watch any couple bicker for an hour straight, it would definitely be them.

And while Roy’s confession of love was just as cheesy and sappy as Ted’s locker room talk, seeing these two FINALLY work it out was a sweet relief. It was unbelievably corny, sure, but it was satisfying and pretty freaking cute.

Two closing thoughts to leave you with: I forgot how much I miss the dynamic with Ted and Roy, and boy, did this episode remind me that they’ve had little screen time together this season. 

Perhaps it’s time for a Diamond Dogs reunion?

I’d like to officially request adding Alice to the mix. We haven’t seen her interact with Roy yet, and I would love to see what happens if you put the two of them in the same room. 

And finally, I’m not so sure Rupert is really the one behind the acquisition of Richmond’s shares. 

I enjoyed our stint following P.I. Leslie as he sleuthed to uncover the mystery — it was one of Ted Lasso’s tonal shifts I actually found enjoyable, rather than mind-bogglingly strange (*cough* Beard’s night out *cough). 

And while I would give anything to see one last appearance of the incomparable Anthony Stewart Head, I have this nagging feeling that Rupert’s meddling could be a red herring.

I could be grasping at straws, or the little conspiracy theorist in me could just be raising its head… but Zelda, I have my eye on you.
