The Rookie Season 8: I’m Glad Angela and Wesley Are On Opposite Sides Again

Wesley Evers has spent eight seasons trying to figure out exactly which side of the law he belongs on.

He started as a defense attorney, which was where he clashed with Angela Lopez for the first time and somehow turned that into a marriage. 

Then he became an ADA and mostly stayed in the background. That is before The Rookie Season 8’s DA campaign that crashed and burned. But maybe that was a good thing.

By The Rookie Season 8 Episode 13, Wesley had already decided the DA’s office wasn’t working, well before the votes were counted.

He told Angela he hadn’t accomplished much as a prosecutor and handed in his resignation.

“I love you, loser,” Angela told him from the curb. That reflected the kind of bond the couple shared.

The room full of people who had all shown up for a surprise party that Wesley walked into while carrying a concession speech did help. But if it weren’t for Angela, he probably wouldn’t have taken it well.

And honestly? That is why the couple works. The DA arc felt like it was building to something that never quite arrived. What replaced it, though, is the version of Wesley and Angela this show does best.

The DA Arc Was Always Going to End Here, Whether the Show Planned It or Not

The thing about Wesley’s DA campaign is that it had a ceiling the writers may not have noticed until they were already approaching it.

Wesley, as an ADA, worked because it put him adjacent to the cases his wife was building. He was close enough to matter, but in a different enough role to create friction.

However, Wesley as DA of Los Angeles would have put him in an entirely different orbit from everyone at Mid-Wilshire, taking away one of the show’s best couples.

The writers did not, as it turned out, want to commit to it.

The campaign arrived during The Rookie Season 8, dominated some episodes, generated some tense moments with Monica, Elijah, and Vivian, and then wrapped up with Wesley losing.

The show had done so much work building toward election night, only to quietly decide that the interesting part was the aftermath. All of that build-up for nothing.

But to the show’s credit, well, the aftermath has been more interesting than what was happening before.

Wesley being back in private practice means he’s working cases again rather than managing a political operation from the background.

And it means the show finally has Wesley in a position where his screen time generates actual plot rather than commentary on someone else’s.

Shawn Ashmore had been asking for more scenes with Angela since before Season 8 started, and The Rookie Season 8 Episode 16 delivered something the show hadn’t managed in a while.

It had Wesley and Angela professionally at odds again.

Wopez Was Always Funniest When They Were Fighting Over Something Real

The show remembered something in its back half that it had briefly misplaced: Angela and Wesley are at their absolute best when they’re trying to outsmart each other while still being in love. 

The Rookie Season 1 established this so efficiently. He was Isabel Bradford’s public defender; she was on the prosecution side.

They argued about a robbery suspect’s treatment in a way that somehow became a first date, which is either deeply romantic or wildly chaotic, depending on your perspective. Truthfully, it’s probably both, though.

Angela’s own read on the opposite-sides situation was extremely straightforward on The Rookie Episode 13. Their sex life was, in her words, “unreal” when they were working against each other.

Wesley shared that assessment openly enough that the whole cast apparently heard about it at Nolan’s house.

This is not the behavior of two people who find professional tension damaging to their relationship, but who have worked out that friction and handled it correctly.

And there’s a genuine argument underneath the personal dynamic, one Wesley himself has made: a defense attorney keeping the LAPD honest from the outside is actually a structural good.

Angela, a cop who has always known exactly where the line is, seems to agree with that, at least in theory.

The show has always been quietly interested in the ethics of policing.

Positioning Wesley as a check on the institution his wife serves gives that question somewhere specific to live in this final stretch of the season.
